They should've had dual pistols and been wearing a mask, highway robbery that.

Do you mean Quartz Future 9000 fully synthetic oil? I was charged £27.59 (inc VAT) for 4.2 litres of 5W-30 as part of a Ford dealer service and I was happy with this.
Instead of sarcastic comments I would like to know factual prices that other Backroomers would have to pay for this oil.

How about 13 pounds for 1 litre of castrol edge at Halfords!

I often wish I'd got into the business of retailing oil. There's fat profits to be made.
I generally buy GM oil from local Vaux dealer (I'm in their trade club). It works out at about £2/litre for synthetic 5W-40.

Castrol Edge is an expensive oil anyway, but the unit price is always going to be higher for a small quantity. Overheads aren't proportional to the quantity.

I can't beat that I'm afraid, but I'm able to match it on quantity being charged, even from independants! One managed to get 4.25litres in a car which takes 3.5litres. How did he come up with that number?
On a happier note, I notice that the list price for an oil filter on my car's interim service invoice (circa October 1990) has the oil filter priced at £4.80 list price. Today from the same dealer I can get the equivalent filter for £4.50.

Prices for fully synthetic oil at Halfords:-
Halfords' own brand £30 for 5 litres
Mobil £37 for 4 litres
Castrol Edge £43 for 4 litres
So £33 for 5 litres of Total Quartz 9000 fully synthetic isn't so bad after all!

As a mean Scot who spent some time purchasing, I only buy expensive things like synthetic oil when on offer and then I buy enough to last 12 months.
We buy marmalade and teabags on a similar basis (but only 3 months stock) plus toilet rolls/other staples that keep: when discounted at least 40%. Not to mention the essentials of life: lager, gin, gin, gin and wine. Did I meantion gin?
If you can afford it and have the space it can reduce living costs significantly.
Inventory control and stock rotation is required. Gin for example detriorates when kept too long in the bottle so must be drunk fairly quickly.. or so I say to SWMBO:-)
