As above really. One 306 HDi I drove was really quite loud, mine is audible but only slightly.

Hardly a sound on my Fiat Marea Weekend 125TD. You can feel the boost in power, but no real audible noise.

Our Xantia has always had a whistle. One friend we had in the car once, thought she could hear a fire engine! It has never been that intrusive to me. I was led to believe that some whistled and some didn't. I did drive a ZX TD once and that had no whistle at all.
The C5 turbo makes no noise at all.

same with our Xantia HDi - but it's a very distant fire engine and to be honest I'm not conscious of it anymore - maybe it was just that it was a different noise from the previous TD

My VW TDI whistles slightly, but is only just noticable. The noise level probably depends on boost levels

No noise at all on my 406TD, although when the old turbo pipe had a hairline crack you would have thought I had a puncture with the loud hissing it made.

BMW 2.5TDS you can only hear it whistle for a split second but only with window open.
Vectra 3.0CDTi you can here much of the time, but sounds pleasant.

BMW 320d SE Turbo is almost inauduble, - their technicians said that any noise at all was normally the first indication of imminent turbo failure.

I have heard it send that any whistle was warning of imminent turbo failure. In that case, the turbo on our Xantia has been in danger of imminent failure for almost 12 years.

On all of the VAG TDi's I've driven (90/110/105 PD), the turbo makes a slight whine that is only normally audible at low speed in 1st and 2nd gears when cold. Higher speeds or when warm, I do not notice it (though I am a bit more mutton than my teenage daughter...!)

you are right, the VW 105PD has a slight whine at low revs 1st 2nd gear when cold.

Just had to replace front pipe on my rover 218,had a leak for several weeks where you could hear the turbo at just above tickover,got to the point it was really annoying and whistle was head turning.but you can now only hear it at around 2500 rpm when it really cuts in,not very loud though-before any one asks why it could not be replaced before-there was a mod made for my date and finding correct one took longer than expected

Lovely aggressive 5 cylinder growl of the engine nicely audible! :0)
