Does anyone know whether BMW offer a factory collection programe like Mercedes, Porsche and (I think) Volvo offer?

Bmw should know - free call, telephone the BMW Information Service on 0800 325 600.
I know they provide this service for US customers.
|
customers sit in their cars all the way on the container ship from Germany?
Thats dedication,

They collect the car, take a European touring holiday and then fly home and the car is shipped. But you know that didn't you?
|
Nooooo - of course I didnt.
The point is why?
I can see the point a european doing it, but why fly there and then fly back?
anyway - most yanks buy X5s and they are made locally.

If you do that is the car a "proper" UK car or an import?
Do you have a dealer if something goes wrong and perhaps even have to reject the car?
|
I can see the US aspect of it...... A guy who lives in the US bought his Volvo V50 this way. He is a Nurburgring fanatic, and decided on a European touring holiday (inc the Nurburgring) before Delicering the car to one of many ports that Volvo use to ship the car to USA.
In Mercedes case (see Personal collection on their UK website) they fly you over business class, put you up in a hotel, pay for a meal and give you a factory tour for Free (well, its covered by the delivery charge), Pertners are extra. It comes to UK spec (its arranged by your UK dealer), and is UK pre-regeisted and taxed as far as I know.

With respect, is n't rather pretentious to do this for a car brand that is merely seen as a taxi manufacturer in most countries in Europe?

Probably not as pretentious as your statement!
|
not at all pretentious
If you are lashing out on a new Mercedes, why not pay for the "collection feature" and add an interesting holiday to the cost of your car.
Its gets pretentious tho when your new merc is an A-Class!

OK OK, I had in mind a bog standard series 3 when I wrote my "pretentious" note. What sort of BMW are we talking about here then?
|
I'm talking about a 330d or 520d of about £35,000 value. In Mercedes case, its "FREE"!!!! A-Class or S-Class......
As I have alot of family in Germany, and we holiday alot in Germany, I feel its a nice touch to get flown out to the factory, see the production line, then drive the car home, even if you make it a 2 day event, and dont bother with holidays, visiting...... And whether its a 1-series or X5, it shouldn't make a difference.... its still a bit of fun.

"I can see the point a european doing it, but why fly there and then fly back?"
For an American, the easiest way across the Atlantic is to fly! They have collected their car, they couldn't drive it back could they, unless you know something that we don't??!!

I can definitely see the attraction of going down to München to pick up your M3, and ´dropping in´ on the Nürburgring on the way back (just to speed up the running in process), filling up with cheap booze at Calais....etc etc.
|
as long as you dont fill it up with booze before you do the "ring"
Seriously, you want to thrash your new £XXk M with 100 miles on the clock around the ring?

TourVanMan < yes its RF reborn >
|
Don´t they deliver the high performance versions already run in on the bench?
|
Without thrashing it around the 'Ring, having a few laps up and down the gearbox and rev range when the car is new, can't be bad for the running in.
Better than sitting in traffic or on the motorway at a steady 70mph for two hours.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
The yanks do it as they get a holiday out of it and in many cases the "Factory delivery" price is lower than that of local dealer supplied. In the end they pick it up from the local dealer anyway. The cost saving of factory delivery usually covers the airfare and accomodation so it is essentially a free european holiday.
The downsides are that the car must be paid for up front if not using BMW finance and the wait after leaving your car in Europe can sometimes be several weeks.
