My 1997 Diesel Escort 90,000 has taken to droning. Its related to wheel speed, not engine speed. There's no knocking sound?
Wheel bearings seem likely anything else?

wheel bearings are usually directional ie you can hear which wheel the noise is coming from.but could be diff noise
