If it went ahead, it would mean that the ex-icon of the British motor industry had been nationalised twice, once by the British and once by the French governments.

Renault was privatised in 1996. Whether the French government still has a shareholding I don't know.

IIRC the French govt still own a large enough share holding to render Renault takeover proof. Until that shareholding is disposed of Renault should not be allowed to make any further acquisitions IMHO.
