I fancy this for a temporary car?

What's the mileage dude?
|
Old prestige cars are often a liability. Even the most reliable of cars starts needing repairs once it's a decade old, and on an Audi, it can be expensive and complicated.
I'd put my desire for something 'posh' on a back burner until I could afford to do it properly, hey wait, I did :)
That same budget would get a 'mainstream' car half the age with twice the kit.
|
|
188,000 miles.
Just passed MOT with only bulbs needing replacement.

It ought to be yours for £1500 or so. Two questions would occur to me:
1. If anything really expensive - say more than £2-300 - goes wrong, can I afford to junk it and lose £1500?
2. Will I find a buyer for it when I come to sell?
I've just bought a 183000 mile car, and my answer to (1) was yes, and to (2), that everything has a price. I also don't believe that modern cars have anything like the kind of finite lifespan of 100000 miles / 10 years that we used to see. Good oils and better technology / tolerances should see an Audi like this as good for another 100000 miles with careful maintenance. A few hundred pounds of repairs every year is nothing compared to the ravages of depreciation which most people put up with!
|
|
How long will you need the car for as you say it is only a temporary replacement? You could be making life difficult for your self when you come to sell on a high milage gas guzzler, not the type of thing that most people are after for around £1500, apart from the obvious and checking it out mechincally (if he's a dealer then maybe he can get it up on a ramp or lift for you to check the underside) Do you know the garage that just did the MOT? The car looks very local to you so perhaps the MOT place is'nt too far either and you might know it, If it's a decent garage with a good reputation then should'nt be a problem. All I'm saying is that at this end of the market "£50 from a bloke in a pub" MOT's can be likely, yes even in this day of computerised test stations. Best of luck which ever descision you take.
|
AN other,
Although people like us know that cars are good for much higher mileages these days try convincing the average Billy. Even the advert did'nt state the mileage so's not to put people off. This summer I sold a 88'F 320i with 105k and most people were concerned about the miles, so I showed them the pictures of my 85'c 520i with 228k on which the clock had'nt been going round for the last 6 years...

A lotta, lotta, lotta car for your money. A lovely car. You'll keep it, it won't be temporary!
It'll drink petrol. It's not the diesel version which would be going for about 3.5k.
It's probably a little bit expensive for a car that's probably done well over 200k. But can YOU be bothered to haggle over a couple of hundred quid?
You'll have read HJ's carbycar. Front suspension prone to needing new bushes & autoboxes can have a limited life.
You should get back pretty much what you paid for it when you come to sell it though.
I've just rung him. it's only done 188k. Go for it.

Its a bit of a risk buying a complex car of this type and age.
However for say £1400-£1500 if after thorough road-test and inspection there is nothing overtly wrong, I guess you could get another 12 reasonably trouble-free months out of it.
This was a quality car after all.
|
Espada - have a look at the classifieds section here!
|
Almost 50% more expensive and not a quattro? You are having a laugh, Nsar!
|
Almost 50% more expensive and not a quattro? You are having a laugh, Nsar!
Less to go wrong and two thirds of the mileage though £2600 does seem a bit pricey.
|
Searh Autotrader for A6 estates up to £4k and you may reconsider!
|
Look on eBay for completed listings and see what prices cars actually fetch. 'faid it's a gas guzzler & not a quattro. difficult one to sell. I wish you luck with it, of course.
Espada's one comes from a proper dealer. It is a p/x to clear, so I don't think there's any worry about the validity ofthe MOT.

I dont think this is really true. It was my first choice when I sold my £13K Saab which was perfect in every way.
The fact is that if you want really good pictures and a really extensive description this is the best place to advertise.

I agree, I sold a Golf on Ebay 18 months ago and there was nothing wrong with it.
If the seller has good feedback then they should be trustworthy. Its just that the onus is on the buyer to go and look at it and satisfy themself that the description is accurate.

2/3 the mileage = 3/2 the price? Scarcely. Not at that sort of mileage on an A6. Once the car has done 100k nobody will buy it. Except me! And Espada! And quite a lot of people on here, actually.
Yes, I accept that there's less to go wrong, but Espada is after a toy. And a toy without toys is no fun!
Nsar's has only 6 months' MOT, which makes it £450 per month as opposed to this one at £150 per month. And as everybody rightly points out, with cars this age you cannot guarantee them passing the next MOT.

I agree actually, a car can be poorly maintained/driven/looked after and be knackered at 50k or be cherished and be fine at 200k/.

Are you meaning temporary for the winter? It should be great in snow. I used to have an old 5 cylinder 80 quattro and when we had a particularly bad winter, driving that was the best fun I've ever had in a car!
It will be thirsty. I would check that the quattro system is okay and diff. lock or locks work fine as parts can be expensive. But if its got good service record then could be okay.

"if you can afford it" "I wouldn't spend my money on a cheap luxury car" "wait until you are rich enough to afford a proper car, until then drive a Fiesta" "Oh you poor thing, how can you afford to run a car on benefits" "bless the man, lets all chip in a fiver towards an ancient Polo for him"
Give it a rest & stop patronising him! He's got 1800 to burn easily and it's a low mileage car. Expensive things can go wrong with cars at any age. By buying a 'proper' car and running it for six months it will cost him more than £1800 just for the privilege of driving it off the dealer's forecourt.
When I rang the dealer I was expecting him to say "something near to 300,000 miles".
|
£1250 tops
|
I'd buy it, if I was in the market for a sub-£2k car...
go for it!!!

snip.
A 12 or so year old fuel injected 6 cyl ABS four wheel drive car that has done nearly 200k is going to incur a big bill at any time, it is a question of the details of the warranty and, as has been said, whether Espada can afford to write off the £1500 or so a week or a month after the warranty expires.

OK boys calm down....
1. Yes I can afford to lose £1500. Frankly I drive cars which are smaller and/or cheaper than I can afford, as I don't like being to flash. But I wanted to get a new 5-series today I could and would, but I don't.
2. Its temporary - i.e. I will want it for about 3-4 months, at which time, either my Mother-in-Law will have decided to buy SWMBO's Trajet off us and I will replace the Trajet with a Verso and get the Scooby back, or the Trajet will come back to us and I'll get my Scooby back. Either way the Fiesta I am running will go back to London as the spare car.
3. When I am done with the Audi, I'll flog it in an auction or E-bay.
Its just got anew ticket. The car is high mileage but not starship. Its less than 20,000 miles pa, so its sat on the motorway, but not all day everyday.
I'll go and have a look and report back after the weekend.
The only alternative is a three month lease from dsgauto.co.uk, but everything modern is either too bland or expensive. Yes I'd love an XC90, but at £800pcm, no way!

DSGauto have a smart roadster auto for £235 a month for a 3 month lease!
Do they do all their cars on a 3 month lease?

>Your enthusiasm is admirable Mapmaker though Espada had already quoted the mileage.
You are too kind. The mileage hadn't been posted when I started my response...
ANY car might incur a large bill at any time. I agree the likelihood increases as time goes on. But he won't have to write off more than half the cost.
You need to read Espada's original thread to appreciate why Michael is going to be wearing a pint of beer at the Chrismas social, and why Espada can afford to throw away his £900.

It's an Audi - it's built to do what it's already done and more providing it's properly serviced and maintained.

Watch out for cylinder heads: noisy valve gear and check antifreeze and radiator.
If ok and rest is kosher I'd go for it if 18mpg in town is affordable..

Go for it E. You´re only young once. And you´ll kick yourself if you don´t get it - it looks great.
Things may go wrong, but hey, that´s life. 4WD will help this winter too. Decision made IMO.

I've bought 3 cars off ebay in the last 3 years and everyone has turned out to be absolutely immaculate and generally under described rather than over. Whatsmore, each one has cost less than the same models were typically selling for at auction at the time.
I bought a temporary car on there earlier in the year. Paid 3600 for a 170k BMW 540i. Ran it for 5 months, did 10,000 miles and the only cost was a new water pump (£100). Sold it on ebay for 3500 last month - the guy collected it and paid cash less than 24 hours after the auction ended.
I'd trust a well described car on ebay from a seller with a good feedback far more than I would a local car lot which I can get little information about easily.
If you don't mind risking the money (and it's not exactly a fortune) the car drives ok, has a long MOT and has no obvious faults go for it. It's only money. I really wouldn't worry about the mileage - cars go wrong at any age/miles.

Having dabbled with a new lease car (Nissan Primera 2.2 dCi) and with the contract up in a couple of months I have been looking at at second hand again. One of the Men and Motors programmes had an A8 on it at silly cheap money for a 6 year old car, so I started looking, AutoTrader etc. Then one of my suppliers came in the other day with an R reg (98 I think) S8 that he had bought off Ebay for £6,000 with 130K on the clock. When I mentioned I was looking for an A8 he offered me a drive (we had to go to our other site anyway). I have never been in a car so quick in my life. On the M60 it was upto 120 (and going very very hard) in a couple of seconds. I offered what he had paid but others have already beaten me to it with better offers.
I would not want to buy a new Audi but value for money second hand is phenomenal.

These are probably one of the best cars Audi has ever made. Now defining "best" in my opinion isn't implying it's dynamically the best, because it's handling, ride quality etc are worse than equivalent BMW's / Mercs, but it's substance is so much better. Personally I have a 185,000 mile 2.5 TDI Version of the same car, (not Quattro), and will be keeping it until the doors fall off, (a very long time in the future). Driven sensibly it returns over 45mpg, Its galvanised like a dustbin so no rust, (mercs of simlar age and newer are rusting badly), has a very very basic chassis, (McPherson struts) that is durable and easy to maintain in the unlikely event it needs it. The basic chassis is the same as the original Audi 100 5E that came out in the late 70's and they had pretty much sorted it fully in it's final A6 guise.
Avoid the newer model A6 that superseded this Audi 100 shape one because it was a clean sheet car and as such suffered many problems. It also has overly complex suspension like mercs, makes them dynamically better, but more to go wrong and more expensive when it does.
If you need parts there are plenty of audi breakers so it need not cost a fortune to fix and as said the mechanics of the car are basic even though the one you are thinking of is a Quattro, so any mechanic that has half a brain could repair it. For 1500 assuming is good as it sounds you can loose, you could break it for parts and get that back, also that's a nice colour when seen in real life........

So?

MM - you forget I'm Jewish...
The question should be.... Nu? as in 'noo'
y**dish for 'So?' or 'Come on already!' or other equivalents
Anyway, couldn't go on Friday and Satuarday is a no driving day and dealer closed on Sunday so will try to go tomorrow. In the meantime I think MiL is considering taking Trajet permanently so SWMBO wants a small 7 seater eg Toyota Verso. In which case its back to the Scooby for me sooner than I thought.
Anyone any ideas/thoughts about the Verso. Is the Mazda 5 a seven seater? Don't mention Scenic please or Zafira! They were hit with the ugly stick and the missus will not consider one.

Forgot to say that the Europcar rental franchise near my office had a Verso in the lot the other day. I might try to rent it over the Christmas break to see if we like it.

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if I were forced to own a Verso I'd have cover it up a night so it didn't offend the neighbours. I'm convinced there must be an ugly car contest that only car manufactures know about with a massive first prize for the winner sometime in the distant future....Oh and your wife is wrong because every ugly stick in the world was collected and used to beat this to death:-

Ah well. No great loss.
With the imminent (3 weeks and counting) arrival due of BabyBarchetta, the decision is going to have to be taken as to whether the Barchie drives off into the sunset - in this case, to the parents in the SW of France - or stays here, loved but little used. I know EXACTLY which option my Dad favours!
|
Well SWMBO went to look at Mazda5 and Corola Verso. Prefers 5 and we have a test drive booked next week. Likes sliding doors and fancy seats.
I took the boys bowling.......Given the quality of my neighbours on the alley, a week in Alcatraz would have been more enjoyable.

Oh No (banging head against wall), she thinks she wants the space of the Trajet after all...
Anyboby got any ideas about the Mitsubishi Grandis? I want to avoid the Galaxy/806/espace/Voyager things as they are old/ugly/unreliable/overly big (choose your adjective).
