Volvo 850 T5 - duggie
Just been offered a 1997 850 T5 estate at a good price, the car has covered just over 100,000 miles with very little history, the car looks clean no major dents, the paint work has faded in places but that should be easy enough to polish out, one problem is the lambda sensor light stays on ive posted this on the technical matters page, the car belongs to a friend who has owned the car for 6mths with no problems. What id like to know is the owners opinions of these cars or anyone who has experience of this model.
Cheers.

As befitting a guy formerly known as volvoman - my brother has one of these and has had quite a few issues with it although I can't recall the detail he's not been all that happy with it apart from the performance. I had a 940se turbo for quite some time and the lambda sensor light came on. IIRC it turned out to be the MAF sensor which just required cleaning. The local Volvo dealer did it in 10 mins. while I waited for £20.00 IMO the mileage is not a problem, we've had 3 940's and the 850 in the family and the engines seem to go on forever. 100k is low for a 9 year old Volvo.

Hi Duggie,

Although I don't have experience of owning an 850 I have been a Volvo owner for around 5 years, and my vehicle (an S40 T4) has done 95k miles. In the time I have owned it the car has never broken down, failed an MOT or required major work over and above normal servicing. So, in itself I don't think the mileage is too much of an issue.

What would worry me slightly is how the car was treated prior to your friend owning it, and the lack of history. Yes, Volvos can cope with high mileages when looked after, but any car may have a multitude of hidden problems if it has been neglected in the past.

My advice (and I apologise if you have already tried this) is to visit a more specialised forum (Google for 'Volvo Owners Club') and post in the '850 series' or 'Performance Car' sections. Here you should get some good advice from people who have actually owned the model in question and will know what specific problems to be on the lookout for.

Bloke I knew had a 1996 saloon. Utterly fabulous car on (iirc) 130k miles. Absolute minter no probs with turbo or sensors but he thought it needed traction control, and I would have one tomorrow if i could insure it.

I bought an ex-police T5 estate a few weeks back, with 210,000 miles on the clock, basic spec, and few bits needed in the interior, but runs and drives very well.Have a look at www.volvot5.co.uk great bunch of guys and very helpful! These cars can be easily, cheaply and safely chipped up to 300BHP,although wheelspin is a problem...Earlier ones have a diagnosic system you can get codes from yourself,1996> are dealer only, but usually nothing too serious.
