Ford Escort 1.8D Cold Start Problem - transporters
Yello...

I've run a P reg Deisel Escort Estate now for months and when I picked it up it always had problems with it's cold start... It just took loads of turning over before it eventually fired up in a cloud of smoke. In fact, it starts pouring smoke out before it fires. Just never had the time to look at it.

Now... (Predictably) with the cold weather it will not start at all... For the last week or so it's had to be push started (Yes I know it aint good for a deisel engine) and now it won't even have that... It's parked at the bottom of the street and I don't have the manpower to push it back. With only 2 days tax left I need to get it shifting...

Where should I start? I've checked all the obvious fuses etc... can't find any loose wires. The orange light does come on and go off with the ignition just as it should.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Peace.

Do a forum search on this site for "glowplugs"

If they are faulty the light will still go out!

Cheers... it's done 120k with no service history so I'll check them.

If I take em out will I be able to tell by looking at them? If so, how?

Can't afford a garage u see...

Take the lead which connects the heater pluge together and to the power. Get a wire and touch the +ive terminal on the battery to the end of the heater plug. If it sparks a bit then it works OK, if it doesnt spark then it is not working. Tried and tested method! I changed the heater plugs on my Peugeot at the weekend, 2 of them had stopped working!

I hope that this helps.

Wear heat proof gloves doing above. Plugs get VERY hot.

Why bother, if they work today they might fail tomorrow.

Buy a new set from local Motor Factors should be no more than £30 and should last longer, that is unless you like changing glow plugs/skinning knuckles.

Ford Diesels of this are not the best starters in cold weather

I've been driving Ford diesels since the 80's and have never had starting problems even when left for upto two weeks between starts and the battery on my latest Escort is now almost six years old.

Just a thought...a squirt of Bradex 'Easy Start' or similar in the air cleaner should get it started so you can at least move the car and check glowplugs etc.
