MK3 Golf 1.8 'M' reg - Xileno {P}
Do these cars at 120K miles make a good buy? I have looked at the CBCB at it's generally positive. Some reference to corrosion that I have heard elsewhere.
Are these still sensible cheap buys or at this mileage best avoided? It's up for £900. And it's a petrol 1.8 estate.

Look underneath. Our's rotted away (same model/year), but then we live at the end of a muddy track, so it was often parked damp. Wasn't the first one the garage had seen with galloping rust.

I had a K-reg 1.8 CL hatch a few years ago. Mine started to rust on the front wing between the wheelarch and the door. Also got a warning at MoT for having rusty support straps on the petrol tank - cured with wire brush and bitumen paint. Also had to have corroded brake lines replaced.

Not bad if you want a workhorse/ runabout, I would test drive it and look at some alternatives before buying. Handling is pretty poor with standard 13" wheels and soft springs. Theres obviously no ABS and the handling could be dodgy in the wet. Had to put 15" alloys on mine to make it acceptable. (And no I'm not a boy racer).

Mine was the hatch with 75bhp and it wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding! The estate has the 90bhp engine, so should be a bit better. Estate might have stiffer springs too so handling could be better?

HTH,

Rich.

Recently bought my daughter a 1.4 cl 1994 which is underpowered but suits the insurance costs. They seem well engineered cars that give the impression they will last. Hers has done 89k and drives well - most likely helped alot by the 15in 195/50's with alloys. Makes it look the part -- but with a rubber band under the bonnet!

As with any car at this age, it could be a great car or it could be a lemon!
I have a 1995 Golf VR6. Thermostats/temp senders always seem to fail, doors are very heavy on 3 door models, so check hinges. PCB and bulb holders tend to go on the dash display. Check rust as stated previously, but also check around boot area of car (open boot and check body.

Apart from that, if you think it is worth the money, go for it. I would prefer to spend the money on a golf rather than the eqivalent Ford, Vauxhall etc.

900 quid for an M reg Estate with 120k on it?

Golfs really are ridiculously priced.

As long as its an absolute mint example, full service history, the lot, then I would consider it.

120k isn't a lot for these, and they see a lot more miles than that (especially when compared to some of its rivals). My Polo has 109k and its more highly stressed than the 1.8 your seeing and apart from a bit piston slap when cold (characteristic of these smaller VW units) its doing fine.

Like I say, be choosy before you lay down good money, but I?m sure I didn?t need to tell you that!

I shall have a look at it on Saturday. If the corrosion is ok then I think it will be a sound buy. It has just had a cambelt and service.
In this price range one can't expect too much. I think it would make a more pleasurable car than the equivalent Astra or Escort. VW's do seem to hang together quite well.

Apart from the issues I mentioned above, I would say the one I had was well built, had a solid feel to it, and was very reliable.
