Does anyone know the proper name / names of those small 3 wheelers you get predominately in Southern and Eastern European Countries and Asia. I would rather like one, but don't know what to search ebay for! They are called autorickshaws in India and Tuktuks in Malaysia I think. Anyone know what they are called nearer home, and the issues with making them UK legal for use rurally.

I always thought they were simply called tuktuks. I remember I used to drive past a dealer in Brighton that sold them... so there's obviously someone on the case already.

Aren't they made by a scooter manufactuer. Piaggio maybe??
|
The Italian ones are. Piaggio Apes.
Confusingly, Ape means bee in Italian. Vespa is, as you all know, wasp. Panda is still a panda as far I know. Lesson over.
Nasty polluting 2 stroke things, driven by lunatic Italians, often delivering bottled water in Milan, and fruit to market in the south.

Thanks everyone, this has got me started, found some on ebay and a place in Italy that sells old ones too, I prefer the older ones with round headlights! Most seem to be 4 smokes though, even a diesel one is available new! Apparently they are taxed as a tricycle and are MOT expempt if they are 49cc.

In Italy they were driving licence exempt but now 80 year old Italians are having to take a test to drive them.

About two or three years ago Safeway supermarket was selling them as a special offer as part of an Italian week. They can't have sold many as I haven't seen any around.

Many of the "autorickshaws" on the Indian subcontinent are made by Bajaj;

.....and yes, there 2 stroke, 4 stroke, diesel and even LPG variations.

There was a Tuk-tuk in use in Bath a few years ago - as a taxi I think. I Haven't seen it recently. However, there is still a horse-drawn 4-wheel carriage that operates there as a taxi, complete with local authority plate on the back.
cheers, SS

There was one plated working in Sheringham, Norfolk this summer in full Thai style livery. Seemed to be busy all the time and was suited to the small roads in the town.
