Anyone got any advice about hiring a car for a one-way journey in the US? We want to go from Richmond to Austin but the major car hirers seem to want an average $500 excess for the privilege. There must be a way round this rip-off? Thanks!

That's a long drive!
The problem is that each State in the US is like a separate country - the cars will be registered in that State. Think of it as trying to hire a car in the UK one-way to Poland.
The charge isn't a rip-off - it reflects the cost of getting the car back to Richmond - OK, they *might* be able to get it back by hiring to people heading that way, but imagine how complicated that would be to organise.
Beware of 'all-inclusive' deals available in the UK - if there are drop-off charges, they're levied locally, on top of what you've already paid.

can be done
Hired one in new york left it in miami. If you book a fly drive with one of the airlines or tour companies with different arrive and return airports there are no extra charges.

When I researched around ,a year back regarding the same thing, I found that National offered the best one way rentals compared to the others.

Be very careful of one-way rental deals between states in the USA. Sometimes they charge you per mile in addition to the usual daily rate and airport surcharge. This happened to me and when I phoned up the rental company to complain, I was pointed to a clause buried in the rental contract. Next time I'll read the small print very carefully.
For a journey between Richmond and Austin you may well get competitive deals to fly instead of driving.
