Anyone help a dear friend and Damsel in distress to source a 1.6 petrol engine for a 1995 A4.
I would have thought that it would be the same as a Golf but I'm not 100%.
A local scrapyard reckoned that they'd found her one for £350 but it turned out to be "the wrong one".
There can't be that many variations. Can there?
All help appreciated.
I'll try and get some more details as to why the replacement she found was "unsuitable"

You need to know the engine code - it will be three letters. I can check later what the options are, but I cant imagine that there are many options for a 1.6 audi. More choices though for vw, and it may be that the item sourced wsa from a golf or a later A3 or something.
have you tried partsgateway.co.uk and similar ?

OK
on a A4 there are two 1.6 engines listed on etka,both 74kw/100bhp
engine codes are ADP and AHL
ADP was used on A4 from 11/94 through 10/96 and on the passat from 01/97 -> 10/97
AHL is the later engine and was fitted to A4 10/96->07/99 and to the passat 10/96->08/2000
Looks as if the adp is the same design as the 1.8 and the ahl is a different design.
Both look to be 8v and have same valves and camshaft althought the heads have different part nos.

The main problem is that in the A4 the engine is "in line" whereas in VWs it is transverse. I'm not sure how portable VAG engines are in that respect.

I think the same engine was used in both the Golf and this A4, but there was a later 16v engine than this, as well as an 8v engine used in Golfs of the same age. However the two websites above should be of some assistance.

The poor damsel referred to at the top of this thread did not come back to me until today as she was told by her friendly mechanic that he had found a replacement engine. However, after messing her about over Xmas he now admits he can't find one.
Can anyone help please.
The engine Code is ADP.
I can't find one on any of the links already given.
Any help will be much appreciated.

This company called Guy Davies claims to be Audi/VW specialists, and do recon engines etc. I cannot vouch for them though, as do I not know if theyre expensive, but worth a call?
