Security Device...What do you think? - 007
I am wanting to purchase a reasonably priced security device and have seen one called 'Moto Lock' at a local car accessories shop...it looks like an imitation 'Disklok'

I was put off by it being only £19.99...my reaction was 'cheap and probably useless'!!

However...on line the going rate for this device is £59.99 so perhaps it is not such rubbish after all.

What do you think? Is there anyone out there who has got one? Is it reasonably quick and easy to fit?

Per Which (iirc) reports nearly all of these physical security devices are 'probably useless'. They may well put off the casual thief though, and for this the cheapest would work as well as the dearest.

Then Which or whoever are wrong. THe Disklok has Thatcham Cat 3 status! Which IIRC is couldn't be forced within 5 minutes.
Useful on a newer car because they make it more difficult to theive the airbag.
I use a metrolock on the TR7 because I'm aware that given the age of the locks etc its that muh easier to nick. Also in convertables visible security is much more useful.
Yes the cheaper ones can be forced but its all time on a 15 year old Toyota as someone has said they'll break-in to the next car along to save the aggro.

For what car is this? If its fairly modern its virtually unstealable to the average scroat unless its of serious value to a pro car thief. And if a pro is after your car one of these silly devices wont stop him.

It is for use on a 14 year old (but reliable) Toyota. The car is valued at only £500 so am reluctant to spend too much on it.

i would suggest for the price you buy it most cars stolen that are pre 93 are taken because they are easy to steal it therefore follows that yours will be harder so the scum will go to the next easier car.

Think you're wasting your money buying the cheap one, any scally worth his salt knows exactly how useless it will be, spend the extra few quid & get the Disclok - it's not only how much your car is worth it's also all the inconvenience & hassle you'll suffer if it gets stolen

I have a disclok I use if I have to leave any of my old cars anywhere not too savoury. IIRC it's the only physical device to have a Thatcham grading. Very difficult to remove as it is a loose fit so there's nothing to lever against.

I agree with Tr7v8 man. The Disklok was the only one ISTR that couldn't be forced in 5 mins. I bought one when I had a Mk3 Cavvy and the car was always there when I got back to it.

I still have the Disklok (I sold the cavvy) and, ironically, the Disklok will be used on my TR7 as well, for exactly the same reasons as pointed out earlier.

All the handbrake/gearlever locks can be forced. My mate had his Mk1 Cavvy stolen in Bradford a few years back and when it was recovered, the handbrake/gearlever lock was still round the gearlever but (strangely) not on the handbrake. They aren't even a deterrent, just waste of £20 (or whatever they cost).

Disklok or nothing in my book. I am not even sure about the cheaper ones that partially over the steering wheel, they just don't look strong enough and maybe would allow a scote to deform the steering wheel enough to force it off ??

Personally, I've always felt that the alarm should deploy the airbags if someone steals the car...

Oh whoopie! you know how much airbag deployment repair costs?

"Oh whoopie! you know how much airbag deployment repair costs?"

Maybe, but it?s the satisfaction factor. Similarly, I would have liked exploding door mirrors. Just enough to remove a couple of hands or a whole arm.

i like the syringe coming up through seat with deadly venom in personally.

Even better if the steering lock is still attached!

When I was involved in the motor trade, one of the salesman accepted an early Moskovich in part exchange. It was included in the used sales ad the following week. Much to our surprise we had a call which asked, A/ did it run? B/ did it have an MOT?
The answer was yes and the chap said he would buy it!
When he came to collect it he didn't even look at it, but he did say this is the only car in London with street cred so low that you could park it anywhere and no one would nick it.
Thats the best security device of all.

Moskvitch?

Those and ladas were not safe in east coast ports. They were stolen in droves and shipped back to the eastern block.

Someone in the past recommended fitting any security device which used a key upside down where it was possible;stopped the use of a puller.
