Bath to Boston, Lincs - Xileno {P}
Sorry, this is a bit dull. I shall need to travel from Bath to Boston (Lincs unfortunately, not USA) and was wondering what the best route is. Multimap takes me up the M5 and then across East.
Has anyone else done this or a similar journey?

Try this route, depending on how quickly you need to get to Boston.
Scenic route, A4-Chippenham, A350 & A429 past Cirencester-Warwick, A46-M69 Leicester, A46- Bingham (outside Nottingham) Then A52 through Grantham to Boston or
A4, M4, A420, A34, A43-Northampton, A45-A605 Thrapston-Peterborough, A1-Stamford, then A16- via Spalding to Boston. No other route really. Hope this helps.

I travel from Leicester to Lincolnshire quite regularly and find that the shortest route is rarely the quickest. You'll add a few miles, but possibly save a bit of time, by avoiding Grantham and spending a little longer on the A46 and then taking the A17 towards Sleaford, joining the A1121 near Swineshead Bridge. You pass both Newark and Sleaford but both have decent by-passes now, as do the major villages (Leadenham and Heckington) on the route.

My folks live in Heckington so I go up that way quite a lot. The best route I've found from the A1 is to get off at Colsterworth, take the little B-road towards Ancaster (don't know the number sorry), towards Sleaford on the A153 and then towards Boston on the A17. The A16 looks more direct but I went that way to Spalding once and it seemed to take forever. You could get lucky I guess.

Lots of the roads in that neck of the woods are single-carriageway, so whether you get lucky or not depends on the time of day you drive and whether it's half-term or not.

The A16 East of Stamford IS slow, because the main East Coast railway line crosses it, by level crossing, at Tallington. Because of the speed of trains and their frequency, the crossing is often closed for over 20 minutes in every hour. If you have a good map you can find a way across, to the North, by bridge, on a VERY minor road.

Had to do Bath to Kettering a couple of times, M4, M5, M42, M6 and A14 was far easier than cross country, although i appreciate Kettering's further south. IMO for Boston, i would go up past Leicester on the A46 and across via Grantham.

Shame that the A46 pops up a couple of times, but is less than direct!

I would have mentioned the RAC map guide on line to you, but having read that a journey from Nottingham to Bideford would have taken you through 2 countries, on two ferries and over 1000 miles....I'll give it a miss.

However, for the future, can recommend viamichelin.com or co.uk
