Can anyone advise?
3 times in the last year I have had a problem- the last time, on Friday, it could have been very dangerous.
I have an 03 Vectra 2.2 diesel .
I was in lane 3, in heavy traffic, on slight uphill. Suddenly the car loses momentum- what years ago we would have called a "flat spot" - I was in 5th and changing down didnt help .So I was decellerating but without any indication, such as brake lights, to the cars behind.
I managed to get over and into the handily-placed services . After 5 minutes stopped I restarted the car and it was fine, and was Ok for the next 300 miles .
When this happens the "spanner" icon comes up in the dash diaplay, which I think means it is indicating a service is due ( booked for 2 weeks time)
Any ideas?

Sorry, I know nothing about this sort of thing.
However, I can suggest that you might stumble across someone more mechanically-minded if you posted this question in "Technical Matters" {Duly moved, along with replies - DD}

Life is complex; it has real and imaginary parts.

The spanner could be engine management light, tell the garage to do a tech 2 check, that will show any electrical faults.

A faulty MAF could cause this problem

I ran a SRI 2.2 Petrol for a while, (X reg), had the problem where engine would not go over 3000rpm, spanner symbol displayed, turned out to be a faulty crankshaft sensor. So would think it is a sensor problem somewhere - but I am no mechinic (SP??).

Service interval reminder should only come on when you first turn the key (that's of course if it's service time)
The light I think you're refering to is the Engine electronics, transmission electronics light.
To quote from the manual:-
If it lights up when the engine is running, there is a fault in engine or transmission electronics. The electronic system switches to an emergency running programme. Fuel consumption may be increased and the driveability of the vehicle may be impaired.
