Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - marilyn
Hi. Other half is considering buying the above car. It is on an 05 plate and is a 2.0d. Anybody had experience of this particular model or Jaguar in general He's finally had enough of the Laguna 3 litre Privilege !!! Sorry RF ! Thankyoooo
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Altea Ego
Dont apologise, I would swop an laguna for an x type any time.

People will say "pah its a tarted up mondeo"

No problem with that, the mondeo is a fine platform for a car, and the jaguar style gives it what the mondeo lacks.

Have just read what Other Half put!!! One problem with your solution RF - if he divorces me he wont be able to afford the car!! It's not BRG anyway - it's JRG but its still GREEN

If it is an X Type d, then is this the same engine as the Mondeo tdci or is it separate diesel engine jags use?
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Xileno {P}
There are some differences here and there but fundamentally it's the same engine as the Mondeo.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - R75
My old man has one, in green as well, he loves it. And I have to say after being in it a few times I will be looking to find the funds to buy it off of him when he sells it in couple of years time. He is also impressed with the dealer backup he gets. Good looking car and a reasonable price. And he has not had any problems apart from a slight fault in the windscreen when he first got it, but they replaced that with no quibbles in a couple of days.

Ditto.

My local dealer (in Basingstoke) has been excellent.

Kevin...

Thanks guys. Seeing we live just north of Basingstoke perhaps I should try them rather than the one I went to. After being asked not to, he rang 5 minutes from then end of the rugger to give me details of the finance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Test drove the 2.2d today and was well impressed.

If you've driven it, liked it and can afford it, go ahead!
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - MichaelR
It's the same engine as in the Mondeo. It's the same lots of things as the Mondeo, except the price tag which is considerably higher.

Don't see the point really, either buy the Mondeo if badge isn't a concern, or buy a BMW/Merc/Audi or a proper Jag if it is.

The only reason I can see to buy one is if you want one of the AWD versions becuase at least it offers something more. Otherwise the X-Type 2.2d offers everything the Mondeo ST TDCi or Titanium X 2.2 TDCi offers often with exact same components, but costs up to £10,000 more. Oh, and has a posh badge and a somewhat... interesting interior.

Particularlly want a jag? Buy a used S-Type or XJ for the same money....
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - R75
10k More!!! Where can you get a new Mondeo for only 10k then? My old man didn't pay much over 20k for his, and thats with leather, so only about 3k more then a mondeo at the most.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - marilyn
I think that this GREEN one has just been reduced to £16k from 19k. Can't ask other half about this as he has taken his flat cap and gone golfing!!! ManicMaz
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - MichaelR
I said UP TO 10k more. An X Type 2.2d Sport Premium is approx 27k whereas an ST TDCi with leather or a Titanium X can be had from 17k.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Aprilia
I sold a 2002 2.5 4WD Jag to a local chap earlier this year. It had (IIRC) about 30k on the clock. He has been pleased with it.

Be aware that there is a very long list of TSB's on the X-type, however if you are getting a new one you should be OK. Dealers give 'good service' in the sense that they are polite and try to be helpful. However I suspect that in terms of fixing faults they would be not much different to a Ford dealer - they are expensive though. My customer wanted a towbar fitting and the local dealer quoted about £800! - which is a lot to have a bit of angle iron bolted on to the chassis rails. I got him the bar for £125 and fitted it for £100.

I am not a great fan of 'retro' styling (a la Jaguar or Rover 75) so I would save some money and pick a Mondeo. But if you like the styling and can stomach the depreciation then they are fine I guess.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - marilyn
Can you enlighten me as to what the long list of 'TSB's' is?
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Aprilia
TSB = Technical Service Bulletin. Notifying dealers of 'bug fixes' on the car. The X-type's introduction was followed by a lot of TSB's. They had all manner of problems, some of them quite expensive to fix (the auto 'boxes were problematic). Some of them were small, like new software for the climate control.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Altea Ego
At least they bothered. A lot dont.

I suppose that an X type is the same as a Mondeo only in the same way that an Audi is the same as a Skoda. (Shared platform, engines, etc.)

If you had driven an X type then you would have noticed that the ride, comfort and ambience are quite different from a Mondeo
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Xileno {P}
Snobbery has driven the UK car market for years. The fact is that the majority of people would rather have an X Type on their drive than a Mondeo, no matter how good the Ford may be. The mechanical similarities between the cars is irrelevant.

Followed a very nice BRG x-type estate through town today - what a cracking design. Miles better than the saloon IMHO. Definitely on the wishlist!
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - cheddar
The X-Type diesels are the same as the 2.0 130 and 2.2 155 Mondeo engines, the chassis is also based on the Mondeo though the X-Type (saloon and estate) uses a version of the Mondeo estate's rear suspension (to accomodate the rear diff etc on 4WD models) as opposed to the Mondeo hatch/saloon's multi link set up, this give the Jaguar (2WD and 4WD) a slightly less sporty feel that the Mondeo, the Mondeo is particularly responsive and sharp where as the X-Type is, well, more Jaguar like.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Buster Cambelt
Buy whatever you fancy. It's your money. Whatever you buy you will always find someone who loves them / hates themor soemone who can quote an article saying how good / bad they are.

Not my cup of tea but they do look nice in JRG or BRG. My golf pro has one (2.0D but not sure of trim level) and it seems fine if a little cramped.

Michael thinks that the X Type is basically the same car as the Mondeo.

Some folk would say that the SEAT Leon, VW Golf, & Skoda Octavia are basically the same car.

What Car? recently did a test which was simply a comparison between these 3 VAG cars.

Has anyone ever tested an X Type against a comparable Mondeo?
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Happy Blue!
CAR tested four VAG cars and the Skoda won.

Test a £20,000 Mondeo against and £20,000 Jag and see what's better. I'll bet if the badge was obscured, most people would take the Ford. Mind you, isn't depreciation always the biggest factor.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Xileno {P}
I doubt it because someone interested in an X Type is unlikely to also have the Mondeo on their shopping list. That's not to run the Mondeo down, I know they are good cars but it's aiming at a different sector and as I said above, the UK car market is largely driven by badge snobbery.

Update on the will he/wont he/ situation. Well, he's stopped thinking and bought one but NOT the JRG. He went for a Quartz with Charcoal leather interior - I haven't seen it yet but at least it's not green. He paid almost 16k for it - eight months old with just under 8k on the clock.I've got no idea if that is a good price or not. The best part is that they actually took the Laguna Privilege in part exchange!!!! Thanks for all your replies, especially the "snob value" posts - as he's got to park it next to my mud splattered Rover 25, I think any snob value will be lost !! Maz

No no you have it all wrong - the snob value will be doubled, trippled even.

One climbs out of ones Jaguar and sneers at the Rover 25

>He went for a Quartz with Charcoal leather interior..

Is the Quartz a metallic bluey grey colour?

Kevin...
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - marilyn
Don't know quite what the colour's like as he only picked it up today. It was dark when he parked it on the drive and sneered at my Rover! He has treated it to a trip up the pub so can't check colour till he gets back.
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - marilyn
Kevin - the silvery bluey grey one is probably Zircon. Quartz is more of dark metallic grey. Maz
Thinking of buying Jaguar X Type - Flying Red
Quartz is the middle shade of grey between platinum (silver) and slate (a dark, pewter grey). It's a great colour!
