Anyone remember these things? I've owned a few over the years and really like them. Im considering another GTi Turbo (petrol) and probably need someone to remind me why i shouldnt (or should for that matter.
My enduring memories of both my Gti Turbo 1 and Gti Turbo 2 are a comfy, fast and sweet to drive car that gave good service. But i guess they are all getting bit older now.

"remind me why i shouldnt"
because if you do I shall be insanely jealous!! Always wanted one, but as you say - getting on a bit and I think rust is a major problem in that they finished production before Cits became (virtually) rustless.
How could you resist one like this?

My partner and I are thinking about buying a rebuilt DS. So I won't be too jealous, but the CX is a fantastic looking car that was great with the turbo.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

An absolutely fantastic car.
As long as its one of the later ones, you should be better protected against rust as I understand it?s the earlier ones where tin worm can be most rampant
As long as the car has been really well looked after and you have a good parts/repair specialist at your disposal, it'll make a good alternative to today?s dreary offerings. In fact, if your brave enough and have a manual of some description, there?s no reason why you can't do the routine maintenance yourself. Its probably not as complicated as people make it out to be, especially not compared to today?s motors!

Not only remember it, I actually saw one going South on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago a few months back. I wonder where _he_ finds spares!

Espada,
I'm now horribly confused - I want a DS as well!!
Is this of interest to you and partner??

Oddly enough, I saw two CX's in Detroit a few weeks back.
A friend of mine owned a CX GTi Turbo in the early 90's Fantastic car but he ended up selling it when he was presented with a repair bill for the braking system which was not far off the value of the car. I can't actually remember what the problem was but it killed off his enthusiasm for Citroëns.

I've had 4. An early 2L safari, a GTi and 2 GTi Turbos. Outstanding in their time, I suspect those creaky doors that rattled when you shut them, the vile under-engineered handbrake mechanism and the weedy headlights would stick out like a sore thumb nowadays. Excellent ride, superb comfort and that unique dash made me feel special. Couple that to the Turbo's ability to produce shove-in-the back acceleration, the speed-sensitive steering and peerless brakes made each journey a pleasure. They were all jolly good towcars as well, but I shouldn't mention towing here ...

There´s a very late one with 50k on the clock at the moment going in Germany - 1989. Looks immaculate. I´m sorely tempted.

Thanks for all the feedback people,
Overall it seems impressions are favourable then :-)
I should come clean slightly, i do fancy another Gti Turbo but am not as clueless about CX's in general as it would seem as i am currently the owner of a 1982 model 2400 ie prestige. Which is for sale.
The white car on german e-bay looks very nice but its not a turbo, just the 2500 normally aspirated. Wheels and plastic intake give it away.
If anyone happens to see a good value turbo for sale, feel free to post up here :-)

Never owned one myself, but my granny had two, and I thought they were utterly gorgeous. A few friends had them too, and last one I travelled in was in the early 90s ... an amazingly cofortable, floaty experience. They made every other car of their time feel like a stone-age relic.

If you hate beautiful things, then don't buy one.
If you want to be a conformist, don't buy one.

I've had a couple over the years and loved them both. I was toying with the idea of GTi turbo as well but the memories of the rubbish quality of the electrics and trim put me off. Along with the ruinous expense of a failed heater matrix (very common) or the eye-watering cost of a clutch replacement (if you pay to have it done). A friend's CX had all sorts of problems with the heater sensors, he never got it working correctly and it ate oil coolers, they would last about 18 months before leaking.
If you do get one try to avoid one with a sunroof. They always leak and rust. I'd avoid aircon too, the under bonnet area is crowded enough without it. Watch out for the cost of metric tyres too, better to switch to standard sizes.
Having been so negative, I would still buy another if I found a really good one, but only as a toy. I wouldn't want to have to rely on it. But they are a superb driving experience. In fact I'd like two. An very early saloon for the true 'magic carpet' ride and excellent weirdo dash and a GTi turbo 2 preferably chipped.
Good luck.

You might be better off with an XM, similar qualities but fewer problems, especially corrosion.

The problem with the XM is that it just looks weird, whereas the CX is a thing of very great beauty.

Hope you find a nice one. But make sure it has just had new tyres - have you seen the price?
Last year my friend turned in his smart GTi turbo for a new LR Defender - I'm still trying to figure that one out...

I remember the hours spent waiting for the AA as yet another electrical component went kaput - the middle of Picadilly Circus was a particularly pleasant one, especially as the AA man took one look at it and said he wasn't even going to open the bonnet!
I had a dark gunmetal '88 GTi auto for about five years - absolutely wonderful thing, bar those electrics. Apparently they weren't earthed properly, which didn't help.
By the time it had all got too stresssful - about 1997 - they seemed to have all but disappeared from the roads.
Incidentally, I used to buy tyres in France - much cheaper.
Used to get it serviced at an outfit in Brixton that owned the only RH-drive Mk 1 Turbo Prestige (long wheelbase) - now that must be the ultimate CX - the quilted leather had to be seen to be believed.
C6, anyone?
