Polo 1.6 GL (1996) - Adam {P}
Hi,

A friend has the above car and says it always jumps "like she's in too high a gear" nearly every time she drives it. But this problem only occurs when it's cold. When it's warm, everything is fine "more or less". Vague I know.

Any ideas folks?

Many thanks,

Adam

Apparently it does happen when warm but less times than when it's cold.

Sorry for the confusion.

I can't believe that none of you clever chaps know what this simple little problem is ;-)

Ok - free pint to anyone who answers.

My Polo (a different breed however) had similar problems not so long ago.

The breather pipe had split. This was allowing un-metered air into the induction system and was causing some kangaroo style progress. It only every used to 'surge' when the throttle was applied after the overrun.

Is performance down? Mine was as flat as knacker, not that its a ball of fire to begin with.

Check engine breather pipes for splits and poor connections. Actually check the air intake system as a whole for possible leaks.

I was tempted to suggest looking at the ignition system, the distributor cap and rotor arm for pitting and corrosion, but this normally manifests itself as misfiring Is there any of that? Rough idling etc?

Other than that, it could be an injection problem, in which case it might benefit from something like injector cleaner.

BTW, I would save that free pint for someone who knows a bit more about all this than me and actually pinpoints the problem. ;-)

I'll take your comments and check them off R. There's enough there to be getting on with.

Thanks very much. Appreciate your second lot of help today!

Cheers,

Adam

Could be the temperature sensor. Although my daughter's Polo is a 99 model, hers was running like the proverbial pig. Sluggish, would give up occasionally when cold and take ages to restart. Put in a new sensor and now it runs like a dream again. Hope that this helps.

Thanks for the really helpful replies! I've made a checklist and I reckon I'll be able to check most of them off. At least I can find out more info to better answer the points.

I'll try and have a look today or tomorrow and get back to you.

Again, thanks again. Don't all think you're getting pints though ;-)
