"Sadly, low-tech coppers at the scene - using the good old Mark 1 eyeball - clocked the high-altitude vigilante as he dispatched the camera into the void, and he now faces a fine of up to £13k for destruction of public property."
Still, at least he escaped the points!

Our local camera in High Lane, near Hazel Grove, annoyed a lot of people when it was first installed. So much so that someone backed a lorry into it, bending it quite somewhat. I observed an aged workman straightening it by means of a sledge hammer and piece of timber. I wouldn't have imagined that he could do it, but he did, and it worked at least a year before the post was changed.

Public property? Bah. If they belonged to us we'd all get a share of the profits. Just try to ignore the fact that we pay for them in the first place.

Life is complex; it has real and imaginary parts.
|
Surely we DO get a hidden share of the profits - the money goes into something (I know not what) that helps to keep taxes or council tax or some other unhidden cost down.

More to the point, did you see this on the El Reg site?

someone in our village deliberately drove over our gatso in a dumper truck.
the guy's a local legend now

According to the report, the man was doing "50mph in a 30mph zone".
Thank goodness for GATSOs to catch idiots like that.

The best Gatso attack I heard of was mentioned by Jeremy Clarkson on IQ. It happened in Holland. On the back of a Gatso is a small hole. Well this clever chap has used this to fill the box with expanding foam. It killed the camera with almost no visible sign outside.
It's nice to know that Gatso's are equally loved throughout Europe as in the UK.
JC did mention there was a website for Gatso attacks. Does anyone know it's address.

I think the people involved belong to the Tuf Tuf Club (www.tuftufclub.com/ ). They're the people who blow up Gatsos and encourage readers to send in photos of their speedometers whilst they are going flat out.
|
It appears that the Tuf Tuf Club site has been pulled.
The following articles are interesting on the subject.
www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/article/0,13005,...l
www.taxgloss.com/Tax-Genericized_Trademark_D_-_G-/...l
The second article is quite long but has some very interesting information on Gatso around the world. It did state:
"GATSO cameras can be defeated by placing a camera flash gun in the rear window of the car (or front windscreen), connected to a photosensitive cell. When the speed camera fires the internal flashgun to take the photograph, the flashgun in the car is also triggered by the photocell, over exposing the photograph. This is illegal in the UK."
