Golf Mk5 Build Quality - Vin Diesel
Not sure if anyone else feels the same but the build quality on mine (3dr 2ltr TD) is terrible. The dash rattles in several places as does the drivers door (well something in it). The whole trim shakes over rough roads - maybe I got one that was left on the line when they went on strike.

Its now developed a tinny rattle under the passenger seat as well. Really does spoil driving it cos its actually a great car to drive.

The drivers window has a mind of its own as well - press up and half the time it goes right down.

I wonder if there's an issue with the golf's handling at high speed as well. I've only been driving for 7 months now, and I've already seen 3 mk5 TDi/GTIs involved in accidents, noticeably all 3 in the wet.

Just me ?

They all have ESP so not sure about that though I will say that mine handles really well

Neighbour has one and thinks it's great. Hasn't reported any rattles.
Golf Mk5 Build Quality - Vin Diesel
a few people I know have them and they say the same - I reckon I got a dud although some reviews have reported naff build quality as well

To be honest I think I was fooled by the badge - any suggestions about resolving it ??? Could I say its faulty goods ???
Golf Mk5 Build Quality - Xileno {P}
Depends how long you've had it. I think you may have trouble convincing the dealer that it's faulty. Best to take it back and see if they can solve the rattles first.

Just feel disapointed with it as its a company car so I am stuck with it for 3 years (well 2 1/2 now) and I spent a lot of time choosing it over other cars.

I really dont know how the dealer would sort it out as i would guess your looking at having to take the trim and dash fittings out - cant see them really wanting to do that can you ?

ive had a 2.0 gttdi now for just over a year.
no rattles and built like a tank!!
think overall you have been unlucky but theirs gonna be problems no matter what car people get,its all the plastic in them.you want rattles try a corolla, i nearly had to drive with my foot on the dash it used to send me that mad. urghh sends shivers down my spine thinking about it.

Had a few VW company cars with minor niggles. Persevere because all of mine were sorted,

e.g.

- Wind noise on Passat around driver door = small hole in door mirror seal
- Squeaking seat on Golf GTI 1.8T = some trim on the inside of the Recaro seats rubbing... replaced and sound gone.

And now have another marque (ok is a Mondeo) that had a noise that was a front anti-roll bar bush. Now diagnosed (after few days work) and fixed.

If you're with a decent lease company then dealers are happy to look at these problems. They either get paid under warranty repairs or via Lease company.

When all hope looked lost on the Passat wind noise I played the reliability card with VW corporate (the advert in the 80's with the ear ring if you remember) and then I pushed the garage a little harder. And then they put the decent mechanic on it... and he fixed in no time. All the others claimed when pushed they couldn't hear the noise anyway... which raised the question how altering the door fit helped if they didn't know what they were fixing.

20k in 6 months with a 1.9TDi - no obvious rattles. Only problem has been an intermittant dicky exterior temperature display, fixed at first service (@ 18.5k). Excellent car.

The only thing that im annoyed about is the matt finish (around heater controls and on the 'arms' of the steering wheel) has started to peel and scratch. Other than that, no squeaks or rattles.

I know what you mean, I hate that coating they use - you see it used on quite a few cars. It marks so easily.

13k miles in mine, one rattle in door trim when the car was delivered promptly fixed by dealer. No other obvious rattles. Take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it.

Handling is excellent and the ESP really works. Try hard to unsettle the car round a small roundabout and the ESP pulls you back on line. Nice to know such a safety feature could be helpful one day if you really needed it.

empty fag packets usually cure rattles for me,i like the fact that if you are involved in a bad crash then the safety cell pushes all the right buttons in my opinion,as regards 3 bumped i usually find that the people who bump cars like these are the ones that have lost touch with road conditions and surroundings and are more than likely on the phone as well.

I had a full afternoons test drive of a new GTI.

It rattled more than my Megane 225 and had quite a lot more wind noise at the door.

Saying that, occasionally the Megane seems to have a fit of rattles from the dashboard, convinced its got something to do with the thing acclimatising to temperature or humiditity, only seems to happen on a night?!?!?

One of my colleagues at work has a Passat and, much to my astonishement, acutally removed the entire headlining to relace a loose wiring clip. Apparently it was rattle free once this was sorted. I didnt think this kind of fault would be covered under warranty?

Intermittent "creaks" from dashboard/driver's door junction. Rear wiper has mind of it's own - I think this is a known fault (linked with autowipers?), and requires a new motor - waiting for first service. Mat in boot is "low rent" and ill-fitting. Otherwise, great.

Why not? If the car is not perfect, it should be fixed.

Will Renault not fix rattles that detract from your enjoyment of the car?

I'm a regular critic of VW on these pages having had three unreliable Golfs (one Mk3 and two Mk4s). I too was fooled by the badge but experience has taught me never again. Despite the bad experiences I went to the launch of the Mk5 at my dealer and liked it. But I thought the interior was cheap, nasty and plasticky and clearly downmarket over the Mk 4. More to the point I thought the interior of the current Astra, for example, was far superior.
Never mind VinDiesel, 2 and a half years will soon pass by and you can get shut of the heap and buy something decent.
Golf Mk5 Build Quality - MoneyMart
I agree... interior of Mk5 is nowhere near as nice or as classy as Mk4. What I particularly don't like is the stupid and totally unnecessary big radio display. Fine in the daytime, but very distracting and glaring at night when it's lit up like a tele! They obviously did it to make it look like a poor-mans SatNav/DVD display, but it just looks rubbish!

I've had 3 VWs previously (2xGolf Mk4 and 1xNew Beetle) and all were prone to rattles and squeaks. The beetle ended up having to have a brand new seat fitted when it was just 3 months old.

I've now "graduated" to an Audi, and find this much much better than the VWs for squeaks. Also find the dealers actually listen to you occasionally, unlike the VW dealers which are just interested in making up profit-driven work that doesn't need doing, rather than fixing the list of things you asked them to look at!
