Please can anyone help with my Daughter's 306. The idle speed intermittently increases to around 2,500-3,000rpm. When this happens the rev counter stops. Garage has replaced the idle control valve, which cured it for a few mins, but then the problem reoccurs. Garage has spent all afternoon trying to sort it, without success. The only clue is that the rev counter dies when the idle speed starts to vary.
She now has the car back but it is no fun to drive!!

Any fault-codes? On a '98 you stand a good chance of having the first of the direct-fit [no HT leads] long coilpacks. If it's a Sagem one; they can break-down internally and "back-spike" the ECU's sensitive circuits causing all sorts of weird faults. [This is particularly likely if non-genuine plugs are fitted.]
They've been replaced by a modified type made by Bougicord [it's stamped into the plastic] and changing to one of those before it destroys the ECU is a very wise move.
Other common faults are: the throttle position sensor; the connexions of the combination fuelling relay heating-up; intermittant shorts in the coolant sensor; a bad earth on the main gearbox earth lead stud; a loose connexion in the main underbonnet fusebox; or a loose earthing bolt behind the N/S rear parcel-shelf support.
Or none of those.

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply. The car has HT leads, so must be one of the earlier models. We will work through the other points that you mentioned.

Update.
No faults stored. Tried almost everything, it must be the one thing left, whatever that is! We are now at a complete loss as to what is causing the problem. Now it will start if the accelerator is depressed but dies immediately it is released. Next step is to send the ECU to be tested.

i think screwloose has your answer in his reply as if the ecu was fault surely it wouldnt run at all,the only thing i can add is if its the same as 106"s then the loom connections under the bonnet definately want pulling apart and checking.

Understand this is a little old now but i've have recently had prescisely the same problem with precisely the same car.
Screwloose was right- Ecu test confirmed it was fried by back-spike from sagem coil pack.
The garage will probably know this, but MAKE SURE YOU GET THE COIL PACK renewed as well the obviously the ECU. I needed a new lamba sensor too (this may have been unrelated).
Unfortunately this all cost £575. The good news is it's fixed, and i absolutely positively am returning 10 more mpg than i was previously (now 40.2)

Thanks for your reply. No, not too late as the car is still in the garage. The ECU has been to two different test companies who say it is fine! The coil pack will be replaced next week when the ECU is back. There is one coil pack with HT leads, not individual ones.
