when replacing bottom ball joint on a 93 frontera does hub,cv joint have to be removed to gain access or can it be done in situ?

Don't know this vehicle but usually, with FWD,the CV joint will preclude using any of the screw type splitters. If you are replacing damage to the rubber boot is not going to matter so you can use a fork type splitter, and a big hammer:)

read my question, and by the way any ball joint splitter can be used

It helps but it can be done without disturbing cv joint.
I believe the set up is similar to many vauxhalls as the Frontera shares many components with other models. Before tackling job, as previously mentioned, make sure vehicle is safely supported on axle stands not just the jack. Give the lower balljoint nut a wire brush and then a healthy dose of release juice such as Plusgas or WD40. Make yourself a cuppa whilst allowing the fluid to penetrate.
If you can, make sure BOTH front wheels are supported off ground as it will be easier to push down on lower control arm/wishbone as the anti roll bar will not try to push up as it will do if the opposite wheel is still on the ground. It will still take a bit of sweat and effort though!

Remove any locking split pins from ball joint nut and using a well fitting GOOD quality spanner (there's no room to get a ring spanner on it if it's anything like a Cavalier/Vectra balljoint!) try to shift nut. When it does start unfastening you may find you can't remove it completely as the CV joint blocks it. No matter, just unwind as far as possible and then take your balljoint splitter and lightly grease the forks where it passes around the joint. Grease it as metal on rubber will tear the balljoint protective boot - although if you are fitting a new joint it doesn't matter but it helps the splitter to engage.
Once joint is disengaged from lower arm, use a crowbar or long lever to force down arm until the hub can be moved out the way. (I presume you have disengaged track rod outer joint from stub arm?
Hope this helps.

I've never done one of these, but one thing I would be careful of is to make sure that any stored energy in the torsion bar isn't released violently when the ball joint is seperated.

It *may* be the case that when you jack up the car, and allow the suspension to droop, the torsion bar is unstressed, but it is best to make sure first.

Axleman,

Hi axleman, I can see your frustration with the rest of the comments on this post. It's like asking how to make an omlete and getting replies saying "I don't know how to make an omlete, but I can help you make a cup of coffee, but be really careful when you boil the kettle in case you burn yourself".

Most of the replies on here seem amateurish at best.

You are correct in your assumption, the outer CV joint casing gets in the way, preventing you from removing the balljoint from the steering knuckle. I know that you will have fixed it by now, but I will post this for the benefit of anyone that is searching for a solution to this problem.

There is a knack to doing this - You will need to remove the circlip from the driveshaft (by removing the free-wheeling hub body and clutch assembly from the hub body and you will see it - you don't need to touch the wheel bearing adjustment). This will enable you to slide the driveshaft out of the way by a couple on inches and give you the necessary clearance to remove the lower balljoint.

Why don't people read the question, and then if they know the answer and ONLY if they know the answer give a reply.

Most of the replies aren't even related to your specific question - Why do they reply if they don't actually know. They just make themselves look stupid!

Obtain a good worksop manual. Probably not the best answer, but I always find they give really useful information! You'll need torque settings etc anyway to do this kind of job properly in my opinion!

They can even be downloaded off the internet.
