Hello All,
Does anyone know how to confirm that a post 2000 V70 is a 140 or 170 bhp model,
many thanks

There are three ways, one easy, one involved, and one subjective.
Easy
On the engine is a white sticker with the engine code.
B5244S2 = 140
B5244S = 170
The only difference between the two engines is ECU software, and aftermarket software tuning vendors typically claim 180BHP for both.
Involved
The two variants have separate gearbox designations;
B5244S2 (140) = M56L
B5244S (170) = M56H
Here the difference is in the ratios, with the M56L (140) being the 'taller' of the two (a higher roadspeed for any given engine RPM)
Subjective
I have driven both engines many times; neither are roadburners but the 140 variant goes flat beyond the mid RPM range. In contrast, the 170 pulls in a linear fashion all the way to the redline.

Many thanks for the response,
cheers

No worries, benno.
Having helped I've hung my anorak up for the day now. ;-)

Now I thought the 140 was 10v and the 170 was twin cam 20v, you learn something every day.

In terms of the 2.5 litre engine applied to the old 850 and the first generation V70 that was in fact a rebadged 850, cheddar, this is perfectly true so you can sleep easily! In round numbers the 10v is 140bhp and the 20v is 170bhp.
For the current - P2 platform - S60/V70/S80 however the engine in question (which has its roots in the earlier version)is 2.4 litres in capacity, always 20v, and the only difference between 140 and 170 bhp variants is software.

Thanks SJB, I suppose I was half right.
