I am looking to spend c£5-6k on my next car. I want something that is cheap to run and insure, reliable and no bigger than say a focus.
Any recommedations would be gratefully received

A Focus?

No sarcasm expressed or implied ;-)

None taken. A focus does seem an obvious choice especially because of the insurance. Just wondered what other people thought as cars are not my strongest subject to say the least

I imagine something like a Honda Civic?

Totally reliable apparently. But parts are £££.

Old shape Astra (pre 2004)?
Great second hand buy. should be able to get a nice one for 4k.
Good luck whatever you do!

If you like the Focus, the Focus is the car to buy. Better than Mk4 Astra in every possible way, better value than VW Golf.

Toyota Corolla or Mazda 323 or Nissan Almera. All are reliable.

I'm amazed at how good a car the Focus is for the money.

Agree, the Focus is great to drive and reliable.

The Astra petrol engines are very sweet.

No doubt, better to drive than the Golf too.

Many Thanks for the replies, looks like the focus might be the one to go for. Next question - the best place to buy one? Private or trade?

You have more rights buying from a trader but you will be paying more for the car.
You could always consider an auctuon.

..or even an auction :-)

Just to jump on the bandwagon, go and test drive a Focus, then go and test drive anything else that gets suggested.

I'll bet you any money you end up with the Focus.
