Mondeo TDCi tyre recommendation? - Big Bird
Hi all

I have Continental premium contact 205 55R16 on the Mondy estate at the moment.
After 24k the front are nearly down to the wear bar and a close shave this morning (sudden breaking on wet lane, lots of ABS judder and brown pants!) - has reminded me to start planning for new tyres.

I know these cars are popular amongst BRoomers - So any thoughts on what to go for next? same again or would I be missing a chance to get a better all round tyre? I don't push it in the dry but more wet weather grip would be reassuring.

cheers
Dan

My TDCi (205/55/16) came with NCT5s. They lasted reasonably well on the front (22k), but were no good in the wet - exactly when you need them to perform. Then went for Bridgestone Potenza RE720 on the front. These are brilliant in the wet and consequently slightly more rumbly on the road. These have now done 20k and still have 4mm left. 18 months ago they cost me 85 quid each. The NCT5s on the rear need replacing soon (done 42k). I'll replace these with RE720s as well.

My Mondeo TDCi on 205/50-17's came with Conti Sport Contact II's, I ran it on Conti's both Sport Contact II's Sport Contacts (i.e. not II's and which were just as good) until 78k miles, typically the fronts lasted approx 25k and the rears 30k but for nails in tyres etc. At 78k I put on Bridgestone RE040's, the fronts only lasted 17k though the rears have a lot of life left in them, I have replaced the fronts with new Bridgestones because they drive well and are good value.

I had a company car that was a Vectra 2.5 V6 SRI estate on the 205/55-16 size, I found Pirelli P6000's to be fine and the fronts lasted 30k, not bad for 170 bhp estate car driven enthusiastically.

Michelin Pilot Premacy's on mine. Happy with them . Sounds like your wet weather grip will improve with whatever you get seeing as they will actually have some tread.

Mine came with Michelin Pilots. Fronts are down to 3mm after 21,000 miles. Seemed OK in both wet and dry, but wet performance obviously dropping off now.

Leasing company won't replace them until 2mm, so need to be careful for the next month or so.

24K miles on a front wheel drive car, with a heavy(?) diesel engine is very good going. I wouldn't get anywhere near that mileage out of the front tyres on our C5 2.2 HDI. If you like the handling the tyres provide, then stick with them.

I have had Michelin pilots on my Mondeo estate and they were good. Now have Wanli's fitted and they seem ok, and seem to be lasting longer than the Michelins.

As an aside I am contemplating getting a TDCi Mondeo estate and was considering the 115 bhp one, with the Titanium spec. Any thoughts on this? I'd prefer to buy a used one but they are pretty rare...

I might well do just that, didn't want to miss a chace to change if anyone new of a better option at a good price.
There doesn't seem to be much difference between the Contis and the Bridgestones, price wise or write up as far as I can see.

Yokohama A539 would be my choice since their forte is wet braking; which you rate above dry roadholding, Big Bird.

They came out 5-6 years ago, and I'm hoping they will still be available for my Primera when the current ones are up for replacement as I said when I posted on a tyre thread in september:
"Interesting diamond shaped tread pattern, quiet, good ride, excellent wet braking and resistance to aquaplaning, good wet cornering, average dry braking and cornering.
I was going to try something else this time, but Swmbo hit something which punctured the casing eight miles from home and decided to try to get back! She arrived with the Yoko smoking and completely flat, and I was amazed at how tough and Swmbo proof these tyres obviously are, and booked in for another to replace it, and when tyres are needed (they last well too), will continue buying these A539s".
