1999 V Plate Passat Estate TDi Auto (Tiptronic) done 128K without starting problem until two days ago - now happened twice in two days on cold start up.
Problem is extremely fast revving for two/three seconds (basically as if I'd hit the accelerator a few times) then settles down and runs smoothly as usual. The revving up and down is much faster than could be done by blipping the throttle to the floor a couple of times. Given next service in 2K miles (about 5 weeks or so), is this worth worrying about or should I get it to a VW specialist ASAP?
Any comments appreciated......
Cheers

Is this an early TDi PD? If so; it might be one of your unit injectors is coming loose: is the sump oil level increasing?
A brake pedal position sensor, or a fault with the fly-by-wire throttle might also cause this.

Thanks Screwloose much appreciated - sorry for delay in posting.
The car is 1999 V plate (AJM engine code I think) so one of the very first TDi PD engines.
It's due for a 130K service in the next couple of weeks so I'll get the independent specialist I use to look at these points.

If it's an AJM; one other thing that you could try, is a new engine coolant temperature sensor. There's been a rash of those failing lately.
