I am looking for a car to replace our ageing XM diesel estate and have the chance to aquire a 2002 Laguna 2.2DCi estate fully loaded with sat nav and all the toys 50000miles full service history .It has just had new discs and tyres and is an ex lease car. What should I look out for ,I have taken it for a short test drive and everything seems to work as it should but not having had a Renault for many years I would apperciate any comments,

Check the clutch pedal first thing in the morning when cold. Put your foot under it and pull it up, if there is any movement the master cylinder is going.

climate control panel goes wrong, and needs a new one, Leccy sunroof sticks - try it in all positons. Check all toys, and make sure the engine is smooth.

Enjoy - nice wagon

Nice car, how much?, I would buy it myself at the right price as long as it is not metallic lilac.

According to other forums these engines invariably eat turbo's and take other expensive engine type gubbins with them so if it was my money I'd steer well clear.

I know that anyone can buy a Friday car (Vendredi?) but here are my tales of woe re my Laguna Diesel Estate:

Windows wouldn't open, windows wouldn't close once open.
Sunroof wouldn't open, sunroof wouldn't close once open.
Diesel Injector packed up on autoroute between Lyon & Nimes
5 low profile tyres punctured (wheel brace broke whilst trying to get one off in Dover dockyard whilst catching the ferry to France on honeymoon!)
central locking eratic.

Apart from that? Nice car

If you don't mind me asking, how much are you getting offered the car for? I have been looking at the dci 120 Lagunas, maybe 3 years old and they seem good value for money?

Renault dealers don't get a good press either. They do seem like good value though. My local dealer has a 120dci Dynamique hatch on an 04 plate with 20k for £9000. I was tempted to take a look until I read about all the reliability issues.

Its up for £7495

I've had both shapes of Laguna the old one (on a M reg) and a new one (on 51 plate), ive had lots of cars in my years and most have had some things go wrong in their life. The original laguna i had was very good for the 3yrs/80k miles i kept it, the only events i rememeber were the drivers seat breaking and a noisy fan, all fixed under warranty. The newer one was a much better looking car and drove very well, but it was the biggest bag of bolts ive ever had, things went wrong that i never new could go wrong with a car. The final straw came when one of the coils went one day and i just managed to get it to the dealer, who couldnt do anything for 1.5 weeks, it just sat outside for 10 days, they didn't even attempt to look at it.
I sold it after 18 months for a 9k loss, but was happy to get rid, my vauxhall which ive just replaced had one thing wrong in 3 years.

Personally I would go for a 1.9dCi, in my experience it's a slightly more refined engine, more economical as one would expect and only a bit slower. It's easier to do certain jobs on as well. The majority of the problems with the Laguna 2's were on the 2001/2 models, later models had these gremlins largely exorcised. However with any car, there is the possibility of some problems.

EGR valves - Renault dealers are now issued with a tool that assesses the operation of the valve and clean it. My understanding is that this valve is now checked and cleaned as part of routine servicing but I have heard contradictory views about that. However, on the 1.9 the valve is easy to remove, if you're handy with a few basic tools it is an easy DIY job. The valve can be stuck in quite hard though and it only rotates a modest number of degrees in each direction.

Turbos - my advice is to change the oil more regularly than 18K. I change my dCi oil & filter at 9K and only use a top quality fully synthetic. If you can get hold of Amsoil, then that's excellent.

Make sure you get a FSH, warranty and check everything electrical. Some of the higher spec models come laden with toys. Also check the clutch operation.

There's a new Laguna 3 out now so go in with a low offer.

And the best piece of advice with any diesel is to give it a good thrashing once a week. Mine always feels smoother and more responsive afterwards.

Thanks for the input boys,I have bought a Laguna estate with the 1.9 diesel engine it has a sun roof and headlamp washers the electronic gismos on the other one frightened me a little especially the tyre sensors.I think I can live without the sat nav I have never been lost yet and I could always buy one.

If it has headlamp washers it has xennon lights as well.

It has, thanks

The laguna in our car pool is the joke car!

Longest running problem is that the doors don't always lock and due to the area our Bristol office is in if the car is left unlocked it will be stripped.

A Renault with lots of goodies means lots of electrical items to go wrong - but if you like it you may be lucky
