Have just got some nice new shiny alloys for my primera. And while standing back and admiring them, couldnt help notice the dull and sorry apearance of the calipers.
Question is whats the best paint to use for them, taken into account how hot they get, would hammerite smoothrite be up to the job? or am i looking at something a bit more heat resistant.

>>hammerite
good paint,as far as I know does what it says, been used for years and lasts.Never used myself but mates have without a problem

Thanks Steve, think i will try the hammerite.
My local boyes store stocks it,500ml for under a fiver, cant be bad eh.
|
You know you will have to keep taking the wheels off to clean the calipers now? Nothing worse than dirty painted callipers.
|
Yeh,maybe i need to invest in a couple of small toothbrushes and use someone with smaller hands"Wonder what the wife has planned!!!

Around our part of the country they use the sparkly fluorescent paint. Go well with the plated wheel spinners.

Thanks Phil I ,sounds like the type of paint my son used to paint up his BMX in the summer,i think just a bit too bright for me mate, think i will give the hammerite a go,to be on the safe side. But if all else fails!!!

yeah,, the hammerite will be fine...my mate used it to great affect
alto if u r worried about the heat...halfords have some "manifold" paint.. now this is able to cope with very high temps
but im certain the hammerite is good enough....let us know the results

Hi I have had Hammerite Smoothrite on my Motorcycle calipers for the past 5 years and also on the rear calipers of my bike Trike,it has never come off.An excellent product.

I do like my Diesels to be Turbocharged for that extra OOMPH!!!!

I'm pretty sure I've seen specific paint for calipers in Halfords.
|
Thanks Guys for the feedback,i called to my local boyes store & bought a tin of red smoothrite hammerite.
I plan to make use of the extra hour gained(dont forget to turn your clocks back)and whip the wheels off in the morning & get to work on painting the calipers,i will give it a day or two,to do a few miles and report back if alls well or if iam busy trying to remove the melted paint of my alloys sob"sob"Wish me luck".

I use Hammerite on the calipers of my track day car a Fiesta XR2I. Despite being driven very hard at speeds over 100mph and being subjected to very heavy braking I have never had any problems with pealing paint or poor durability. Hammerite does seem to be a very tough high quality product.

That sounds reasureing carl, just got back from garage with 4 newly painted calipers,so far so good, though ive only done a couple of miles so far.I also made a point of not driving for at least 2hrs after painting last caliper to give it a bit of drying time. Also found that i needed about 2 coats of paint to get the right coverage,it also worth giving the calipers a good going over with a wire brush before painting,so as to remove any flaking rust/paint.Anyway hopefully it will be up to the job,and quite a bit cheaper than halfords paint.

just a thought would the same paint be suitable for rear drums, perhaps more heat involved

I also agree with using Hammerite.
After good advice from the forum I have painted my Mondeo drums and a Yaris drums.
Certainly improves the appearance of the drums through the spokes of the alloys.

My hammerite smooth coated calipers and rear drums on my Fiesta have lasted 4 years so far with no impact from some very hard braking.
Unless you are a rally driver, imo heat proff paint is unlikley to ever be required.
I did however have hammerite cook (the smell was atrocious) after brake fade in my drum braked 1946 Rover 16 when descending a 1 in 3 hill in the Highlands.. but the paint was still there 2 years later - if a little brown at the edges.

Just to give everyone an update, the hammerite has been spot on and as stayed on the calipers & not a drop melted on my wheels.
So its 10/10 for the finish, cost and durability,(after plenty of heavy braking). Thanks to everyone who contributed, very pleased with the outcome.

The old motorbike cylinder black didn't do too good a job on SWMBO's Focus rear drums - it had faded after 6 months or so. Thanks for the update - next dry day, it'll be Hammerite Smooth.

Please don't do what others do and slap paint all over the pads etc, the paint runs down into the pad slides and contact points and causes then to stick.

Hi there, try demon tweeks, they do caliper paint that is heat resistant.
