Hi all, I recently purchased a 53 plate one focus tdci (115ps) and Ive notcied that on long runs I'm getting around 40-45 mpg driving at around 65-70 (I'm no boy racer by any means). I've notcied that also should I need to put my foot to the floor when the turbo kicks in I can see lots of emissions from the back of the car. This doesnt happen when the car is stationary and revved (with my GF looking at the exhaust).
Anyone offer any help/advice
Thanks in advance
Alex

I seem to remember a thread about there being a software upgrade to solve this problem. No doubt someone with more knowledge will answer it more precisely.
|
Yeah there was a software update to the ECU.
No doubt Blue will be along soon. He'll know more.
|
Just realised that's exactly what X said!
I'm in a state the obvious mood today.
|
Thanks guys, so I guess I have to high tail it down to my local ford deadler and ask for this. Cheers.
|
No. I'd wait for Blue to come along only because, I'm sure I read somewhere that an update made the problem worse.
I can't remember.
In the meantime, get down to www.ffoc.co.uk/forum.
There's a dedicated diesel section there that will no doubt have your answer already.
Good luck

IIRC the update was for cars older than 53 plate, as on the Mondeo an ECU update or reset makes the car feel less refined for a few miles until the ECU has 'learnt' from a few sensors etc.

Nothing to worry about mate.

My Mercedes diesel used to put up some smoke. 2/3 applications of Redex (for diesel) and then putting in Shell Diesel (not the supermarket stuff) - this cleared up matters - smoke was around 90K miles - sold it just under 100K and the exhaust not smokey.
Save 1 or 2 p per litre at the supermarket pumps and pay £££s a few years down the line. Current cars are petrol and run on Optimax - 6p /litre dearer but that is just £7-8 /mth for peace of mind that you are using the best - lubricants in the fuel give a cleaner engine, a smoother running / reponsive motor and possibly the odd mpg or 2 more per gallon

Probably nothing wrong. Its not the most frugal oil burner around, nor the cleanest. It was however the first oil burner that said "hey this is fun!" A pokey little unit that in the Focus.

Smoking TDCi is a well known problem due to a fault on the EGR valve. Believe there is a Ford TSB about it, the dealer should know and do the work under warranty - it's only 2 years old after all.
RF Said: "It was however the first oil burner that said "hey this is fun!""
You didn't get to drive a BX or ZX TD back in the late 80's then??

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
|
I did, honest I did. Never said "fun" tho. A ZX tried to kill me trying to join the roundabout in it. I then realised you had to rev it to 3.5k revs and dump the clutch to keep the turbo in!

Thanks for all your help guys. Will try some redex in my tank and check out what you said about the valve. Cheers again. And yeah it is a fun "oil burner" really can go if you want it too.. (hurt me gf's neck first time i showed her the turbo from standstill).

>>Probably nothing wrong. Its not the most frugal oil burner around, nor the cleanest>>
Should be competitive in the mpg stakes and is also well refined, the EGR suggestion seems to make sense re the smoking.
>>It was however the first oil burner that said "hey this is fun!" A pokey little unit that in the Focus.>>
Well the Golf 110 was probably the first truly sporty diesel though it did not handle like a Focus nor was it as refined.

Millers Diesel Power Plus www.millersoils.net works really well on cleaning up the injectors. My garage was most impressed with the figures on the last MOT on my car after I'd used this.
