I need to get to Windsor at 8.30am and would like to know the best route from Nottingham on a weekday morning. Trying to arrive at the M25 section before its too bad is an option but I'm also considering the M1/A43/M40 or M42/M40. Which do you think would be best and how long should I allow?
Thanks

I have always used the M1/A43/M40 route, then just hop on the A404M and get on the M4 for a junction then into Windsor. It won't matter which way you go you will hit some traffic at that time in the morning, but most of it will be on the short stretch of the M4 and getting into windsor it's self!!!!

TU has it right. The M25 north and west a/c to j16 is a disaster in the mornings.

I agree with A404 but IMO totally bypass the M4.
When you reach the traffic lights on the roundabout over the M4 J8/9 - yes traffic lights on a motorway.
Take the FIRST exit onto the A308M - Is this the shortest motorway around? It is often difficult to see on many maps
Then turn right at the roundabout onto the A308 to Windsor.
Much nicer route and I cannot believe it would be jammed.
It is a route I often use but not at your time.
Last w/e I hit the queue on the M4 down access ramp and got a hours delay for my troubles. mumble mumble

This is an alternative but you can get long delays on this road as you approach the roundabout entering Windsor (unless it has changed in the last 18 months). Either way you will get hit as you enter Windsor.

I travel this section several times a week - Henryk's advice to take the A308 is spot on. Yes it will be busy but nothing like the M4 eastbound and it brings you in to Windsor without having to approach via the dual carriageway off J6 of the M4 which is often car parked. I don't know how long it will take you in total but I'd allow 30 minutes from the A404M/M4 roundabout.

Since you're looking at something close to 3 hours to do this trip (well, definitely more than 2, I'd say) wouldn't you be better off staying the night in windsor the night before? I'm sure you could find a cheap b&b somewhere?
