I've just asked the AA Routefinder to suggest a route from Sheffield to Oban and it's come up with M1, A1, A66 then M6 and so on. I thought the obvious route (and the one I took last time) was A57, M76, M60, M61, M6 etc.
Is there something happening to the roads round Manchester that I don't know about? Or is the M1, A1 A66 route actually quicker?
Thanks!

Despite being French, obviously, www.viamichelin.com is very good and gives turn by turn directions and you can then reverse the route, for your return, and will revise and print the instructions correctly.

As some one who lives on the North West coast (having driven to Oban many a time) and looking at the route suggested by the AA, I would venture that it is the more direct of the two, particularly as the A66 has been improved in recent years.

Thanks for the advice. The RAC & Michelin routefinders also suggest the A66 - I'm sure that last time they recommended the M60 route. I'll give the A66 a go.
Thanks again

Checking the route with MS Autoroute 2003, it too suggests using A66 (and M1 etc.) To the ferry terminal at Oban from Sheffield city centre there only about 8 miles in it between both routes though.

Well www.mappy.com is my usual but it doesn't recognise Oban!
