if you remove the trim on the lever assembly,it will expose the cable.using a pair of pliers try pulling the cable beyond lever travel,
I have not yet seen one break as yet-stretch yes,but once opened replace the cable..then try lubricating rear lock assy/barrel ie the barrel will have siezed up

Thanks for previous help.
I have been unable to pull through cable as suggested. I think the kink in the cable is quite big!
I am now hoping to crawl through the back and straighten the cable or disengage cable from boot lock.
Can anyone tell me the head size of the bolts holding the seats to the bodywork please?

Thanks,
Awas.

They dont kink, as they go through the trim and unless the trim is badly damaged would suggest a lock problem.as I mentioned before stretched cable is possible but kinked is unlikely, as the booted version check release cable works on open boot.release lever is located below lock assy when boot is open

not quite sure whether you can get to the rear seat bolts from inside the car, access is gained from inside the boot! i think...

There is an old trick that often works on bonnets,it could work on a boot.Have someone push down on the boot as you pull on the release lever,it may just be the catch is sticking.

If it is a steel cable that you have then be very carful how you handle it.

These cables (and the one for the bonnet) are made from very high tensile steel. This is good as over time they will not stretch. However, at the same time this makes the cable very brittle. So don't try bending it as you may snap it. If you do want to bend it then heat it red hot with a blow torch first.

boot lever lock is seperate,ie it has a release lever mechanism just below the lock/latch.if either fail it would mean forcing the exterior lock open.apart from setting the alarm off/if locked/ it may be easier to force the lock open using a strong screwdriver,But that is assuming lock is actually working and not a key defect??

Sorry, release lever to lock is located to passenger side of lock.So a possible water leak may have got into the cable?
