How do Vauxhall justify the whopping £45 for a new glass (not the whole fitting) that was stolen by some horrible person last week! They say it is because it is "heated". This adds at least £1 to the price of the £2 glass.
I supose I am lucky. Other dealers wanted up to £60 for this small item! On the other hand, a rear tailgate lock costs only £21 - a much more substatntail item.
Anyone else suffered like this?

I had my door mirror damaged in France by an English motorist who seemed to be having an altercation with his wife or kids. I had no witness, and he denied responsibility despite driving in the middle of a narrow road.
The cost of a mirror and lens, plus fitting, for my Honda Accord was 144 Euros - it came to £98.63 on my credit card statement.

Ford charge a different price, IIRC something in the order of £38 v £32, for the nearside v offside glass on Transit Connects. Something about commercial vehicles more likely to break nearside mirrors, or so they said. Quite what that has to do with the cost of glass heaven only knows, the shape is an exact mirror image. Sorry! Pun unintended!!

It's probably because the more you make the cheaper they become.

The dearer one was the one they said they sell the most of! They quoted the good old market forces supply and demand argument.
It would appear that whether you apply their logic or yours there'll always be a smart answer!
And I'll never win.... but I've got used to that when it comes to motor parts prices, the bit I need is always the dearest.

Substantialness isn't the only factor governing selling cost. Also, you can't compare a high precision wing mirror glass with a low-tech tailgate lock.

That's about right price wise I suppose - some "nice" person side swiped my car last November and took off the passenger door mirror on my Vectra in the process. Total cost to repair? £174 pounds sir.
Matey didn't stop, didn't report it to Police or his insurance company so he should be getting a CCJ through his door over the next few days (his insurance company are dragging their feet)....
|
Well done! If it was a hit-and-run how did you get his details and get a CCJ against him!
|
He failed to stop but I didn't fail to get his number.. Reported it to Police on phone immediately then in person next day.
Police traced an exact match to a lease company who eventually identified the driver.
Police "invited" him to produce docs and make statement etc and all relevant info was passed back to me.
His insurance company have been dragging their feet for over 6 months so Direct Line (my lot and fair play to them) passed it to one of their panel solicitors.
Still no joy so Court docs (CCJ) have been sealed and will be winging their way to matey's home address in the next few days.
I seem to remember HJ saying something like its worth asking your insurance company to pursue the driver individually if there is nothing forthcoming from the insurance company, and this is whats happening here.
All for a little under £200 eh....

Unless the court has already found in your favour won't this be a Summons rather than a Judgement (CCJ)?
|
Hmmm not sure - its in the local county court near to the solicitors offices and asks the court to award against the other driver for the damage plus costs.
I believe he'll have his chance to either pay up there and then or go to court or get the ccj awarded against him - whatever the result I have to say Direct Line have been excellent throughout..
|
SFAIK it will be a judgement saying "Pay £XXX to the court by such and such a date" and if he doesn't it will be bailiffs and more costs. I chased some fool for £80 and he wriggled but finished up paying me nearly double, to cover the amount owed plus my costs of pursuing the matter.
|
Ridiculous, because, as the other car seems to be a company car (owned by a lease company) chances are the insurance has a big excess, so the other drivers employers will end up paying the bill anyway. They may well recover the cost from their employee.
The driver must have reported it (or been caught out) as his insurance company was involved) but will probably assume that everything has been sorted out by someone else (one of the joys of having a company car).

one of my work colleagues had to pay out neariy £400 for a new complete wing mirror assembly after the one on his three week old E-class parked outside his house was chopped of by a lorry.Ouch!
|
|
My Zafira Mirror GLASS (yes only the glass) cost me 45GBP when it was stolen. VAusall say that there are many factors which make this price up. Why then could I have got a complete assembly for only 60GBP from one of the "cut price" Vauxall Spares firms on the internet? It seem sto me that unless Vauxall satrt charging sensible prices they will encourahe a market in "type" spares. All to the consumer's good. This cannot happen fast enough for me !

The price of which probably explains why it was nicked in the first place.

Halfords does replacement wing mirror glass at much more reasonable prices.

If you mean the self adhesive type, I bought one of these from Halfords for a Renault 21 about 10 years ago.
The shape/fit was OK but the glass had rough edges and wasn't tinted. Fine on an old car but not so good on a newish car.

I imagine though that'll just be a plain mirror, and not have a blindspot mirror incorperated in with it?
|
I find ebay an excellent source on new mirrors...
When I drove a company car and was responsible for our fleet, any employee who received a CCJ for a case like the above would have lost his company car (and his job) as the rules were quite clear that all accidents had to be reported to the police. Failure was treated as gross misconduct.
His employers (unless he owns the company or its a personal lease car) must be very lax. If so their fleet costs may be out of control.
