golf mkIV stalling -speed sensor??? - mochibou
My golf 1.6SE starts fine but within 5 minutes of driving the temperature needle goes up to 90 and the car stalls when the car is next stationary. Takes a few seconds to restart and after i set off i feel a staggered resistance to accelleration. But it only stalls once. Just had a service and a computer check gives a fault code regarding the speed sensor. Any ideas? my garage are asking for a fortune just to investigate the problem.

Thanks

Generally VW are notoriously bad at diagnosing this sort of intermittent problem. The fault code system they use is no more effective than the ECU light on the dash for intermittent faults (see above forums, or search honestjohn for details). The problem is that the mk4 generation golf sensors and actuators are poorly engineered with respect to those of earlier generations. The ECU in the mk4 generation golf is always having to deal with faults from sensors, even under normal conditions. But it has very complex software that deals with these faults. The net effect is that your *real* fault is just a higher probability than all the *normal* ones.

Also, it's not uncommon for VW to plug their tester in, read that the lambda probe is faulty, they then change the probe, but the owner finds the car still has a problem. The problem here is that their tester feads the fault, correctly, but the fauly lambda reading is a result of the real fault, not the cause. The system cannot trace faults, only display erronous readings.

Your best approach is to find what hardware people have checked/changed to solve similar problems in the past and change that hardware yourself until your fault dissapears. The two links give details of the VAG.COM DIY VW fault reading system, which some people use to aid fault finding on these cars. However, you need to be pretty conversant with how the ECU system works in the first place, before being able to extract useful (cost saving) information from this system IMO.

Hopefully someone will post a more positive diagnosis to your specific fault in this thread for you.......

The most common problem on these golf iv variants for engine running faults can be caused by the engine coolant temp sensor. These usually give an incorrect reading to the engine ECU & thus performance is affected. You say the temp gauge reads 90o very quickly which could indicate this problem (it is the same sensor). The sensor is very easy to fit .It is a 4- pin colour coded unit a push fit into one of the top coolant hoses & secured by a plastic u clip. Also check coolant level in bottle.
