Just happened to catch East enders tonight (OK I'm a regular - very sad I know!!) and apart from the usual ridiculous story line it had a most beautiful Cit DS Decap on - I want one!!!

Soaps have a very chequered history with cars. Ken Barlows car was the only car in Corry for years and years - no parallel parking for Ken!
Even more ridiculous, there was a 911 driving fireman in Eastenders, who made his girlfriend change the oil in the street, for a bet.
|
Yes I saw the DS as well and thought 'Why don't Citroen built cars like that anymore'?
I remember Jimmy Corkhill on Brookside lying under the front of a VW camper van trying to change the engine oil. He was obviously there a long time, the script writers didn't tell him the engine was in the back...

Mike Baldwin had a Jag for many years.

Someone in Emmerdale farm has a very nice blue Honda NSX.

They borroewd one of our LDV 200 ex Police vans, for authenticity, in one episode - on screen for about 2 minutes, screeching around a corner, with the officers to jump out & arrest some character.
As a non tv owning B'roomer, can't give much more info about who was being naughty!!
In fact several of our vehicles have been used, in the past, for tv/film work - they were earning the same amount per filming day, as a live extra - £40 ish.
The thing now is for the production companies to source directly from the utility companies/emergency services, working fleet vehicles. It gives a boost to the authority budget, but makes more vehicles unavailable for active duties.
But they do get it wrong, too - the episode of Spooks a couple of weeks back, where thewy sent a British Gas van, for undercover work, pretending to be searching a leak - ought to have been Transco, NOT BG, me thinks!!
&, going back to Eastenders, not sure if there was a Postman character, but did you ever notice a Royal Mail Ford Escort van, in proper livery? This was genuine Post Office property & loaned to the set, from new. So the L reg van, sold around 4 years ago with about 200 miles on, was not even run in. Made £3800+VaT in Colchester auction!!

Best recent motoring programme must have been the Bob Dylan "Don't Look Back" documentary. Footage of UK tour in 1965/66 showed loads of street shots full of the cars of that era. Great stuff!.

That's what I enjoy most about such programs. Like George Smiley's Rover P6 for instance!

Well spotted! I didn't think anyone else would notice something like that, I think working for a utility company makes me a bit sad! I'm sure BG will be quite happy with the mistake though, it helps to spread the myth that if you aren't with BG then you don't get engineer's assistance and your house blows up... :-)

My fav motoring prog is ........
The Sweeney,
Historic 70's motoring joy in every episode.

My fav motoring prog is ........ The Sweeney, Historic 70's motoring joy in every episode.
That's strange RF, considering your legendary bias 'i hate Ford come what may' in these pages and nearly all the cars in the Sweeney were Ford....
My favourite program for cars is CHiPs. No not the bikes but take a look at the many many cars in the background, and the freeway scenes.

Oh Imagos, you poor misguided fool. Find me a post where I denegrate Fords with the exception of 1/ A certain ford focus saloon / sierras in general / last of the escorts*
I am at heart a Ford boy, I come from essex for gods sake, I have FOMOCO tattoed on my william, Capris taught me the facts of life and more perversions than any decent man should know.
If it wasnt for the fact I was seduced by a gorgeous french strumpet, I would be driving around in in a Focus 1.8 tdci Ghia estate (in black)
I stand accused and guilty of most things on theses pages, but an anti Ford bias?

There is a fantastic but true story about a police LDV van used as a "nondy" (non descript) surveillance van by the robbery squad.
There was an armed robbery call put out at the Ilford LEB office. It so happened that the nondy van was being used for other (non police) purposes. i.e. a large fridge freezer in the rear being shifted from an officers old house to his new one.
As they screeched around a corner on way to the robbery, the unfastened fridge obeyed the law of centrifuge, crashed through the rear doors and landed in the roadway in front of a queue of other vehicles.
Lots of writing being done on that one I think.

My best motoring programme was The Professionals. How I envied Bodie & Doyle speeding down the road in their Capri and RS2000 chasing the baddies, while Cowley was getting chauffered in his 2.8 ghia MK2 Grandad.

Would be in my dream garage but in White, as I've said before on HJ the coolest car ever, so please everyone stop harping on about RS, VW etc, you'll only ever see a DS saloon once every 5 yrs on the road, let alone a decap.

Be interesting if they did bring the DS upto date ? Has anyone seen the new 2CV, imagine what a modern DS would look like, I'd be the first in line
