paying by cheque for tax disc at the PO - matstro
Whenever we need a tax disc for one of our vehicles, I write the cheque and my wife takes it in and comes back with the disc. No card number on the back of the cheque as in every other over the counter purchase.

Question is this; no card number = no guarentee that the cheque will be honoured. What does the Post Office/ DVLC do if your cheque bounces? because you already have the tax disc!!!

They have your address too, and I think you may get a knock on the door.

you may already have the tax disc but if the cheque is not honoured it will be void and will have been void from date of issue- this is stated on the V10 licence application form- if the vehicle wasn't SORN'd then you'd just get an automatic fine thru' the post.

I hasten to add, its never crossed my mind to bounce a cheque in this way. Its just that its always struck me as odd that they can receive payment in this context.

I seem to recall, other than in a senior moment, that GPO tie up the cheque with either the Licence issued/VRM of the vehicle, with details on the back of the cheque?

They know you know

I can blushingly confirm the following about this subject:

If your cheque bounces you are sent a letter explaining that your tax disc is null and void and asking that you return it or send the full amount immediately to your local DVLA office.
You are also fined for the "gap" in your road tax.
Failure to comply can result in prosecution.

I suspect nowadays that the computer system would be very quickly updated so that the roadside cameras would detect you and a kindly PC would be having a word or three with you at the roadside....

How do I know? Because I was stupid to have a senior moment and used a cheque from an account that I'd closed about a month prior to going to the Post Office for my tax. As usual in a dramatic hurry I grabbed the wrong cheque book and didn't notice my error until the letter from DVLA arrived :(

Why bother with a cheque? Most licensing POs accept debit cards these days.

Sounds like what the PO gets charged by the credit card companies. (compared to the few pence for debit card use).

ISTR most holiday companies now add a surcharge for CC use.

Surely only by credit card, which you can't pay with now (at least not online). Aren't debit cards staying free?

Undoubtedly handy, but I'm not sure I trust Royal Mail to deliver. What would one do if the disc got lost in the post?

In "lost" include "stolen" ~ I'm sure it will be fairly obvious to any unscrupulous Royal Mail workers which envelopes contain tax discs.

What good would a tax disc with the reg number SN41L be to the postie now though? Especially with it all being centralised?

I agree though - I'm still bitter after my cd changer got "lost" in the post.

So why do people steal tax discs out of cars? Why are there tax disc holders available which are theft resistant?

L'es,

I'm not having a go! I was asking!

If someone stole my tax disc, I'd say "hmmm - someone's stolen my tax disc" and then report it. Surely then that stolen tax disc for a Ford Focus when used in a Nissan Micra would flag up if the police ANPR'd it or pulled them over?

ANPR will only activate from VRM not what is dispalyed Excise Licence wise.

Ford Focus will show as Licence having been reported as stolen.

Nissan Micra will show as having no Excise Licence. With one displayed, from details of which will show reported stolen. Yabba dabba doo.
