Has anyone actually bought or sold something from the Classified section of the HJ website?

Nope i haven't - have advertised a couple of bits in there with no enquiries.

Perhaps it would be simpler to allow bona-fide backroomers to post their classifieds straight into the discussion forum?

I tend not to visit the classified section too often because it is such a quiet backwater.

Well I'm just about to put a motorbike for sale in there.

If you put ads in to the general section they will disappear after a few hours. Who after all ever looks at page 2?

I have only looked at the classified section once and found nothing of interest. The only way it could have more traffic generated is if it allowed you to link to other ads in Autotrader or ebay for more content and photos. Even this might not be good for the rest of the site.

As it stands I personally would recommend stopping this area of the Back Room.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to add to the thread.

I've not had any interest in the Jag for sale, nor in my old Rover that i sold in March. However, that being said, I have seen a couple of cars there that I might have bought had I been looking at the time.

I also feel that you know the vendor as well, if it's a BR regular. You know their opinions, and can decide whether or not they're "trustworthy" enough for you to buy a car off.

If it isn't costing anything and it isn't causing any hassle then why get rid of it? Some one may find it of use. Those who are selling can put a free ad in there and if it doesn't work they haven't lost anything.

I agree with Orson and Expat

The purpose of the thread was not to get rid of the section, but just curiosity. I rarely look in there as I suspect that the type of car I may want to buy would not be in there.

I HAVE sold something in the classifieds!

A workshop manual for a VW two years ago or there abouts.

I can't remember who bought it, I don't think he's on here much any more. It was done very neatly via text and posts.

I do check on there, but usually to make sure there is no one advertising there that shouldn't be. Before I was a moderator I found it quite interesting to see what people were selling.

I note that a number of cars were offered FOC while the scrap prices were at an all time low.

I would encourage all BR members to use it for any automotive items, not just cars.

I bought some roofbars for an Astra 2 yrs ago, happened to see them in the classifieds as I was about to buy a set from Halfords, so lucky but a good buy....
