I've always set my driving position along the lines suggested here :-

but having done two 250+ mile drives in the last two days, I found myself feeling incredbly tense around the shoulders. Any idea how to avoid this ?

You will have to play with the settings of the seat and steering wheel. Everyone is a different size and all cars are different so one solution to all may not work. My wife recently had a Pug 307 for a day - in the Audi when I sit in the seat my head is no more than an inch from the head restraint so in the event of a rear end shunt it will do it's job. In the Pug try as I might I couldn't get the seat in a position where the head restrain would restrain anything and my shoulders weren't supported - if I did move the seat back to get shoulder support I was sat too upright which meant I had to move the seat backwards to be comfortable with the steering, but then I was too far away from the pedals - the upright position also caused me lower back pain. The problem was down to bad seat and cockpit design.

I bet there was also nowhere to put your left foot in the 307.
