Was sitting next to the aforementioned car in traffic yesterday, it was on an 05 plate and it sounded like a bag of nails ticking over (louder than my 2.0dti vectra), is this right for a bmw?

It is for a 318. Or at least, for the couple I've been around.

Blimey, nasty.

I thought the common consensus was that the BMW diesels were the most refined, apart from the Honda.

Didn't they have some advert or Clarkson demo of the diesel engine idling with a 50p coin balanced on the cam cover? Maybe not a 318

I haven't seen a 318d but the 320d's are superbly quiet diesels. Maybe the 318 is a totally different lump.

AFAIK, the new 318D is a detuned version of the 320D. So, the specific 318 in question is not healthy?

Who'd buy one of those ? I thought the while point of putting a 2.0d in a 3 series was to get cheap tax/reasonable performance and economy linked to a fine chassis; what is a 318d for ?

Lower cost entry point to 3 series diesels, for those who value the badge.

320d is lots of dosh for a 4 pot diesel (£24k)?

Hence plenty of room in the range for a slower/cheaper model.

I think the point about refinement applies when on the move. I was next to a 330d that had just been switched on recently and it wasn't a good sound.

Assuming it is not a mechanical problem, the other usual reason for a diesel being overly noisy is incorrect injection timing.

But this was an 05 car, it pulled away ok, just ever so noisy, like a transit.
