Has anyone any experience and/or opinions of the transmission on this car? Is it reliable, for instance? I have found a 2003 model, with around 22k miles, listed at availablecar.com, for about £12K. Does this seem a reasonable price?

I had a 51 reg 2 litre petrol Avant and had done around 30000 trouble free miles with this transmission when I sold the car. The gear changes were imperceptable and of course there's no power sapping or fuel consumption penalty with it when compared with the "regular" auto box. The only slight glitch was that it took a couple of seconds to engage reverse when trying to go from forward - as in doing a 3-point turn. If you didn't wait for the cogs (or whatever)to settle down there would be a big jolt!
My next car was (and still is) a 54 reg 1.9TDi A4 Avant with the same multitronic system - so far 18000 miles and no reverse glitch either.
I can't speak of long term durability but my searches haven't come up with anything bad yet.

No problems at all with mine. I've got the multitronic hooked up to the 1.8T engine in an A4 Cab and I love it.
Done 38k and just had a service where they needed to change the gearbox oil - think it was about £80 for the oil and labour. Also seem to remember that the steel belts in the gearbox need changing at 120k...which I'm sure won't be cheap.
Yes there is a bit of delay but you get used to it, the only other thing I find is that the creep speed is a bit high and you find yourself having to slow it down in traffic.
I have a Volvo S60 auto as a second car and the the 5 speed gearbox seems jerky and clumsy in comparision to the Audi. I'd definitly have another Audi just for the Multitronic..

Why install RPM meter in a car that keeps its revs at constant level is just beyond me...

Mine is fine so far at 26,000 miles apart from a very slight, occasional juddering when pulling away fast from rest - the sort of thing that's difficult to tell whether it's wheelspin or the transmission.
It's booked in for service on Tuesday week, and the garage says they'll check it out carefully "as we've had a few problems with multitronics".
So you probably ought to go for a long test drive and check there are no abnormalities
You don't say which model you've seen, but asuming its cost new was between £20k and £25k, £12k looks reasonable.

I remember now reading somewhere, something (I do so love precision - so this really annoys me) that some owners have had a clutch or clutches problems which Audi dealers have said is a wear item like brake pads etc. and so is not covered by warranty. I don't remember any more, but maybe someone can help.

The ad says it is a 2.0 Sport.
