Ask in VW how to enter the code.
Because it is saying safe, it may have locked down, maybe it used to say cod or code and after someone unsucessfully attempted to enter the code, after 20 incorrect tries these things lock you out all together.
Entering the code can be a complex operation and you really need to know how to do it before you attempt it.
Best thing to do is ask VW first, then when they say it will cost an arm and a leg, you could try the online unlocking services, but you will need to know what state it is in first.
Amazing prices these things are selling for on Ebay???? You can buy new stereos for 35 - 50 quid these days.

The head unit in my Leon did that once a short time after I bought the car. I think I was trying to change the pin code or something.....
If I recall correctly I had to let it sit for a long time then was prompted with four dashes or four stars or something like that. Something in the back of my mind tells me also it had to be left switched on for this duration.
The dealership will tell you how to rectify it - am taking my mind back four years here - so apologies for the vague response.

Our old Mondeo when locked out would need the radio to be left on for 30 minutes before the new code was put in.
It said something along the lines of "WAIT 30" from memory.
