Replace the engine? Poppycock! My dad had the gasket replaced and the head probably skimmed at about the same mileage as yours. Has been fine the past 8 years.

Unless the engine was really cooked ie severly overheated, which is not often. What makes them say engine needs replacing, have they given you a written rundown on damage caused.Ps why didnt you just post this in previous thread?.although it does on occasion happen, would think head damage is more than likely. But rare complete engine?

I must say I am somewhat skeptical about how we've made the leap from a simple head job to suddenly needing a new engine.

What is the basis for this diagnosis, please? What is the damage to the engine and head? Have they given you a written report? If not, what did they SAY?

Hey,

Thanks for your help........

Well basically they said its severally overheated more than once its formed a actual groove in the cylinder heaad which wont be removed from skimming.

The car as been running without water, there was a scum mark on the bottle and it looked half full i know i should of looked inside but i always thought it was ok, Please dont laugh i know its my fault and believe you me im paying the price now.

Lets just say the tears havent stopped flowing im a single mom on a budget and everythink is going at once..............

I have been advised to get a new engine because the old one is no good.

There was no warning lights come on or anythink which i think is pretty bad dont you.......

I'd definately be inclined to get a second opinion. Seems a bit extreme to have the whole engine replaced, the head maybe if it was serverely overheated but unlikely the whole engine.

How did you know the head gasket had gone? Did it run at high temperatures before cutting out?

If the engine was given a good roasting then it could well be scrap.
Your best bet would be to locate an accident damaged vehicle of the same type and buy the engine out of it. A brand new engine is likely to be prohibitively expensive, even on your relatively new car.
Try to Autotrader for specialist Rover breakers in your area.

If it's a 2003 plate its still in warranty - are Rover warranties still being upheld by someone?

Unfortunately not.

If you're anywhere near Birmingham give Viking a ring (0121 459 6866). About two years ago I got a replacement 1.1 K-series engine for £220. The price included fitting and a new cambelt.

Does anyone else think the "new engine needed" gambit is the sting in the tail from a very tempting repair price offer?

A bit like free checks which find things you never knew you needed (and probably didn't anyway).

A second opinion is definitely needed.

Very common for that engine to be scrap when overheated.I would buy a replacement, either from a damaged car or from a specialist rebuilder like Vege, will save more tears.

Can you ellucidate on the common damage done to the bottom half that might render it scrap? The only things I can think of might be warped/cracked liners or melted piston skirts.

What kind of garage have you taken the car to (dealer, indy specialist etc??) and where abouts are you?

When these engines get very hot the pistons and liners are very easily damaged,i had one where the pistons cooled down were left in an oval shape. It is too expensive and difficult to rebuild these with much hope of it running problem free again.Off the top of my head i cannot think of a worse engine than the Rover K series.

If the coolant level has been allowed to drop too low that there is virtually no water running through the head then it is possible that there was also insufficient water to have a big "steam out" and the temp guage may have been ineffective. I can see how under these circumstances the engine could be scrap.

To determine exactly what damage has been done would require a complete stripdown, which would cost a fair amount in labour. Also the best placed people to make a judgement call are those who can actually look at the engine.

What counts now is making an economic repair. A brand new engine is the most expensive option. A reconditioned motor would probably keep the repair bill in 3 figures rather than 4. Cheaper still is the possibility of getting a good secondhand unit. I think you should seriously ask your garage if they can source you a used unit and fit it for you. If they are not, find one who is.

I'd give consideration to bidding on this:
cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-25-Engine-Box-Complete_W0QQit...m
and then asking your garage to arrange collection and fitting. It's a 1.4 not a 1.6, but you'd be up and running again economically.

If the engine is that badly damaged it won't be acceptable for exchange for a recon.
