Hello,
Would anyone please be able to advise whether a portable sat nav could be used to show distance travelled from a start point without having to put in a destination in advance and have the navigation instructions whilst travelling.
Thank you.

I use a Garmin ETrex (the blue one not sure on model) and that has an odometer which measures distance travelled, regardless to the fact of a route being planned or not.
I would think that most of the handheld ones would do this as walkers would use them when out for a stroll and would probably not be able to route where they are going before leaving.

Blue one is the Legend, I've got the silvery grey one.
TomTom3 had a facility to record the GPS data - this has gone in TT5; don't think any TT would directly support what you ask.

That really annoyed me with TT5. The record facility was great for laps during trackdays as well.
Any way of re-installing that bit of TT3?

Depends what you mean by 'portable', but ceratinly most 'recreational' or 'handheld' GPSr's will do that

Hi ratty.
This can't be done on the TT Go 500. You either have to plan a route or drive with no route specified. With no route specified, you simply see the car's position on the map as normal and the current speed.
If you enter a route you can easily turn the sound off if you prefer not to be bothered by directions you don't need, although the visual directions would still display.
Developing this a little futher, I am a little disappointed with the TTG 500's ability to summarise a journey once a destination has been reached. I would like to know my maximum speed, average speed etc but can't find any way of getting to this information.
Safe driving.

Why don't you just push the little button on your trip meter?
