My favourite A-road - Mapmaker
A68 from Jedburgh to Corbridge. Drove it Sunday evening, scarcely another car in sight, and some of the most spectacular scenery.

What other roads do people like?

I've just spent 2 weeks in Scotland and I don't know where to start. The roads are fab and the driving considerate.

I couldn't say i've got a particular favourite but you can't go far wrong with the Cat and Fiddle

A9, Dunkeld to Blair Atholl

A9 is much travelled, and much maligned, but that bit is as scenic a road as any I know.
My favourite A-road - Bromptonaut
A82/A87 etc, Crianlarich to Uig on Isle of Skye - then the ferry to Harris.

Least favourite? A64 Scarborough to York - utterly inadequate for traffic volume, and without the redeeming feature of coastward views availale in York to Scarborough direction!!
My favourite A-road - Xileno {P}
A46 from Bath to Junction 18 M4. My regular Italian Tuning route for my Renault dCi. I've had the thing absolutely howling.
And I know where the cameras are...

From then on, a leisurely run through the Cotswolds.
My favourite A-road - spikeyhead {p}
There's a triangle in North Wales that runs round Snowdon. Lots of fun, but only in the Winter, too many tourists the rest of the time.

And there's also a back road not far from me that Vauxhall used to use as a test track, until one of their test drivers got several years for a fatal, reckless overtake.

A1101 around Shippea Hill - Completely undrivable at over 30 mph due to subsidence, 90 degree turns for no good reason - I just find the whole area kind of compelling, there's still a hand operated level crossing on the Ely to Norwich line.

Bits of the A303 when there's no traffic on a summers evening.

In fact anywhere rural with no traffic, a good surface and good weather.

Nice to see another fan of the A68 - I love the contrast between the bleak, yet still beautiful, moorland around Tow Law in Durham, and the rolling Cheviots further north. And those glorious evocative names - Tow Law, Fir Tree, Riding Mill, Kirkwhelpington, Byrness, Kielder Water, Carter Bar, and then truly in Scotland, Carfraemill.

About 20 years ago, when the children were small, SWMBO volunteered to take them on the train from Kings X to Edinburgh on a family railcard, and I drove up with the luggage. It didn't mind me going fast over the roller-coaster A68 in Northumberland, and it didn't need to stop for the loo or say 'Are we nearly there?' Bliss - but she never volunteered to do that again.

...And those glorious evocative names - Tow Law, Fir Tree....

Fir Tree? Hardly evocative in my book

Anyway - A75 Gretna to Stranraer in Southern Scotland. Particularly from Twynholm (yes David Coulthard's home) to Newton Stewart. Fabulous sweeping A road with glorious views over the Solway firth to the Lake district and as far as the Isle of Man.
My favourite A-road - patpending
well, one beautiful road is the original A30 from near Basingstoke to Salisbury via Sutton Scotney, Stockbridge and Lopcombe Corner.

However, the road number fiends from the site where they know about why each road has a particular number are already aware of this beautiful road!

"Get your kicks on the A30" does not quite ring true, A36, now that is better.

A82 through Glencoe.

In fact A82 for its fll length. Everything you need, fantastic scenery, quaint pubs / inns, overtaking space, twisty roads - you name it, its got it!
My favourite A-road - Glaikit Wee Scunner {P}
Have to agree about A68 from Darlington all the way to Edinburgh.
Stopping at the top of Carter Bar must give one of the best views in the UK.
Watch out for the safety cameras in Scotland though.
Used the road last weekend as part of my return trip to Isle of Skye.

Billy Bragg recoded a song with the lyircs

If you want to go to Shoeburyness
take the A road, the OK road that's the best
Go motoring on the A13

Its possibly one of the least fun A roads I've driven.

It must be some sort of achievement that in all my 57 years I have never wanted to go to Shoeburyness.

Any Lincolnshire dwellers want to challenge that?

Currently, the A631 from Market Rasen to Louth over the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Some heavy hand has deleted a part of my post (which merely quoted a survey) which now makes the last sentence possibly offensive to Lincolnshire people. It wasn't meant to be.

If you think there is a problem, whoever you are, then please delete the whole post.

I fear you'll get no reply Avant. A mod hasn't deleted part of your post - the swear filter did.

I certainly didn't swear - I quoted a report saying that in a poll the most boring road in the country was the M180 / A 180 from Grimsby to - oh, for goodness' sake, don't tell me the swear filter deleted the Lincolnshire town beginning with S and ending "thorpe"....

If so then it needs looking at - the word should be specified with a space after it so the town can appear unscathed. Supposing someone asks for a suggested route from there to somewhere else.

Help please, moderators!

(Thanks for your help Adam)

Sorry Avant - I wasn't trying to imply that you had a foul mouth ;-)

The swear filter is a little too naeve methinks.

Yep. Definitely the town that rhymes with Skunthorpe.

Thanks Adam - I know you didn't imply that - we are intelligent (so, I hasten to add, are out moderators!) but machines are stupid!

Skunthorpe is a clever way round. If any Backroomer lives there, our apologies for taking your town's name in vain.

The sware filter is unfortunately one of those things that gets it about 95% right all of the time.

Occasionally as in this case, it kicks out an OK word because of a string of characters in the middle.

I can only offer my apologies to you for your post being edited by it. Unfortunately changing the way it works can risk letting in a few words that it would normally kick out when posters add 'inert' characters.

At first I thought "Scun" was Uzbekistani for a lady of the night or something but it's just clicked what it's really blocking.

I'd like to put that down to youthful innocence but I'm afraid it's probably due to youthful stupidity.

Thanks for the explanation though H.

Thanks Hugo - not your fault!

So we must now avoid mentioning:

- the aforesaid Lincolnshire town (or spell it with a k)
- a football club who play at Highbury
- a person who plants microphones or taps telephones
- a piece of turf - and therefore a town in Gloucestershire beginning with Chipping and ending in -bury.

Fortunately not all need to come up in a motoring forum - but pity the unfortunate who asks us for a route from the town in Glos to visit friends in the town in Lincs. As the Irish say, "Don't start at Chipping ***bury".

Avant,

As Hugo has already pointed out, the swearfilter isn't 100% perfect, but it is there for a reason, so please change the record, and return to discussion about motoring.

In my part of the world one of the best roads is the A272 from Maresfield in East Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire. Fantastic on the bike and even fun in the Transit!

I don't know what road it was, but the roads between the M54(?) and Portmeirion in N Wales were fantastic when I drove them about 10 years ago. Practically deserted ... going downhill I was overtaken at one point on a bend by a fully-rallied up Mini, with about six headlamps.

WEll from the end of the M54 you would be on the A5 which can be a great road for driving - except on sundays and bank holidays when you get stuck be old dears doing 40mph and being extremely annoying.
