Now an AA kiosk itself would be a collector's item. Or the much rarer RAC kiosk.

Ok Back roomers, your mission for the bank holiday is to find the boxes with preservation orders on them..
And I know of two you will never find!
|
I'm glad you posted that RF because whilst I had a good guess at what AA boxes actually were, I still wasn't sure.

I seem to remember from my days in UK that there's still a traditional AA box at the top of Porlock Hill in West Somerset, also one not far from Sidmouth in Devon.
How about that for a start?
|
I seem to remember there is one on the A56 between the M6 and Knutsford
|
There is indeed an AA box on the A556 near the Mere Golf club. Opposite it in fact. Wonder if anyone's key would actually open these things now and if you did would you find a working phone?

The AA box key would also open RAC boxes too.

The box mentioned on Porlock Hill by MH,was in fact an RAC one with a 40gall.drum of water alongside for topping up radiators, unfortunately it was removed around 1985/90.

There used to be one in a layby on the coast road somewhere near Thornham in Norfolk, no idea if it's still there? Anyone on holiday & able to take a look, as I live here I try to avoid the coast on Bank Holidays?
|
There's definitely one on the road somewhere between Ely and Hunstanton - either the A10 itself or the coast road. We saw it last Thursday and commented on it but I don't recall precisely where.
I too still have a 1981 vintage key on my keyring...

Sorry about that. Not only have I been away a long time, I must be colourblind as well!

There's one at the top of Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria. A box that is, not a key!>> Sorry about that. Not only have I been away a long

Used to go out to fix the AA boxes and some of them where in the middle of nowhere. You would follow a single-track dirt road for x miles and there it would be in a telephone box. The thing that really used to annoyed me was the fact that there was nothing but tress for miles around about and you would go into the telephone box and it would smell of wee and on one occasion someone even left a number two in it some really sad people out there. Drove me crazy.
