Which would you choose?

Assuming every thing else is equal, condition, history etc - if the diesel were a TDCi I would go for that, though the first TDCi's were 51 plate, so on balance I would probably go for the better spec of the 1.8 Zetec.
Could be worth continuing to shop around though, a 2.0 petrol is more gutsy and more economical than the 1.8, not sure what TDCi's are going for though don't be worried about mileage my '02 Ghia X drives virtually as new at 94k.

The 1.8 zetec. The old TD is a bag of nails

The 1.8 zetec. The old TD is a bag of nails That's might explain why my TD has been the paragon of reliability since i bought it in 1999 with 50K on the clock.Just gone thru 102K and had nothing go wrong. Can not really call it a " bag of nails", compared to new technology it is in a different league, but then againit,s never seen a dealer in the last 6 years unlike many TDCI's for "software" uploads.
Seen lots on the local taxi rank, so they can,t be that bad.

I'd take the 1.8 over the diesel for two main reasons, neither of which is anything to do with the engine. I'd have the Zetec over the LX because the alloys suit the car better, and the nicer interior ought to make it an easier car to sell on.
If we're discussing these engine difference I assume you're looking at the 2.0 TDdi, the forerunner to the present TDCi, which of course uses common-rail injection. Frankly, unless I was planning to do a lot of miles, I think the fuel differences will be negligable, and I believe the diesel will require more regular servicing. Therefore I say the 1.8 zetec, assuming you can afford to fuel it.

How much heavier on petrol is a 2 litre over a 1.8?

2.0 ltr likely to be better on fuel economy than 1.8.

I'm currently running a 2 litre primera so don't think the fuel cost will be a problem as well as we don't do much mileage anyway.
