Best Route - Guildford - Leyton E.London - Downesi1
Hi All,
I need to go to Leyton in East London tommorow morning for 9am....
Both the RAC and AA say I should go straight through the center of London.... Not sure If I fancy that on a friday morning, Any suggestions ?

By car I would be inclined to go round M25 to J2 and in on the A2 , then A102M through Blackwall tunnel and beyond and then on to the A12 to Leyton. It may noy be the most direct but is probably faster than attempting the direct route. Certainly fewer traffic light delays but still probable heavy traffic at that time.

I would be even more inclined to take a train though.

Don't forget to factor in the Congestion Charge! I am not sure what time it starts on a weekday. Autoroute says 38 miles and 1 hr 10 for direct and 83 miles and 2 hours for round the m25
Best Route - Guildford - Leyton E.London - No FM2R
Assuming you need your car with you then I would go straight in on the A3 and straight across. Its a pain and slow, but it'll take so long to get around any other way that you might as well just hack through.

However, I would go early with a view to arriving there around 8:00 and having a cup of coffee somewhere. That will make quite a difference to the traffic you face.

The AA & the RAC use computer programs to give out routes not real drivers with real knowledge.
The AA is dreadful, I brought one of their route planners a few years ago & it was years out of date.
It was directing you through towns bypassed 5 - 10 years previous.
Trust the AA at your own peril.

I would agree with No FM2R.From where you are it will be easier than going round

Another vote for A3, and the traffic will be a war of attrition but not *that* bad really; it won't be utter gridlock either. You should be able to skirt the Congestion Charge zone too, but you'll be running dangerously close to it.

I live close to both the A20 and A2.ie A2 about 10 minutes away,A20 2 minutes, neither are a good bet on or around rush hour, even worse when an accident/incident has occured.Orpington is usually the first to know it,its used as a bypass and is gridlocked

Many years ago I used to travel from Portsmouth (on same route as Guildford) to visit my parents in Leyton. I used to travel during the day.

There is no ideal route. My personal preference was the A3 route through London.

Well not much notice to get advice so this is probably too late.
If you choose the A3 route then I have tried many many routes over several years from Esher to Paddington and this is by far my preferred route.
Should be fine outside rush hours.
Most of the route is fairly easy to follow.
Just a little bit of back route by Charing Cross Hospital

A3 beware of GATSOs
I think on the Esher section after the Esher turn off approaching the first underpass at Hook.
For certain, Just after Hook underpass, Down the hill after Tolworth underpass
On the bend just after the Mercedes car lot and finally just after the next rise

Just before Wimbledon Common pass ASDA on the right.
At the next lights Left onto A306 Roehampton Lane
Beware immediate Gatso 30mph
Past the Queen Marys Hospital
At the next major Junction with the A205 bear right B306 Queens Drive

Beware a really nasty speed hump at the exit of 1st mini roundabout.

At Putney Bridge left over Thames
Keep left and at roundabout 1st exit take A219 Fulham Palace Road.

Just past the entrance to Charing Cross Hospital on the right
Turn right at lights and pass the side of the hospital on your right.
St Dunstans Road.
Follow throught to Barons Court tube station.
Turn left at station and cross over the A4
Take 2nd right Edith Road
Immediate 1st left Auriol Road
Turn right at main road A315 Hammersmith Road
Past Olympia
Left at 1st major junction onto A3220 with Bristol Cars showroom on left.
Straight over at Shepards Bush roundabout. i.e.over the A402

This lead up to the A40 where right towards Paddington etc.

This avoids the Congestion charge Zone.

Then straight on to the East.
I have no experience of the Leyton end of the route.
