Better late than never. After the alternator the last strw on my Corsa 1.7 diesel was the ... sump. I'm told that at 85K it's corroded and must be replaced. That was it. I've ordered a Yaris.
When will GM get the message that customers get fed up being told bad news at the garage?

As well as running incredibly reliable MK-3 Cavaliers about 10 years ago we also tried an Astra Diesel van for a while. One of our guys was driving it through France when all the engine oil was suddenly expelled through a corroded pipe, at which point the engine completely seized. I don't think it was even two years old at that point.

Its a well known fault on the 1.7 Isuzu engine. Seems to happen to most of them.

Isuzu of course being Japanese...

I think the issue here might be the "Designed in Japan - Made in Somewhere Else" policy.

Don't panic Glowworm, but the Yaris was designed in Japan and made in France - at least elder daughter's 04-reg specimen was. Never mind - faultless so far. If they're made to Japanese specifications and quality control there shouldn't be a problem.

Production is split between Japan and France, if you believe the mechanics they say the Jap built ones are more reliable.

Toyota have tied up a deal with pug/cit and fiat and are producing the Yaris and the new small car in Poland I believe
|
Aygo/107/C1 are made in Czech Republic.
Not sure about the new Yaris.

It's the Toyota Aygo, Pug 107 and the Citreon C1 that are one and the same car - all built in the czech republic.
I'd presume that Yaris production will be in the same factory in France as it is now.

I've just done this job on my neighbours Combo 1.7D van (Combo = Corsa van). It was quite easy. Using a pattern sump and getting £15 an hour for myself I still did the job for half what a local independant Vx shop wanted - ie £140 vs £270.
The Vx main dealer wanted £175 JUST FOR THE SUMP!! We left before even asking how much they wanted for labour!!
