My car has a good factory fitted sound system (Dolby ProLogic surround) but the MW reception is appalling. The only thing I want to listen to on MW is the Ashes commentary (I assume it's only on MW?), but the inteference is so bad I can't hear a damn thing.
Any ideas?
(CD and FM are working fine).

My Landcruiser has perfect MW with the Sat Nav disconnected and powered down. Powered up the MW is unusable. I eventually came to the conclusion its because the sat nav has a receiver also which is uses for the traffic alerts on Classic FM, although I don't know if it shares the aerial.
Do you have anything else wiht a receiver in there ?
|
Yes, TomTom Sat Nav, will try it with the Sat Nav disconnected, thanks.
Also just noticed the 'Long Wave' thread, but I think I tried that with the same appaling result.
|
Brill, need to know your car and sound system. Doe sit have an aerial?
NO ( I can call you NO cant I?) your aearial lead has a y connector and flylead in it, one to radio, one to TMC receiver in satnav.
|
I'll find the y if I can and try disconnecting that. But disconnecting the aerial lead at the Sat Nav computer, which is hung under the drivers seat, didn't help.
Mind you, its much less of an issue these days because I'm normally stuck with the Galaxy.

Is it a Volvo with the standard fit Dolby Surround head unit (HU-803 and similar)? If so, some drivers have experienced problems with the aerials, both AM and FM. There are a number of Technical Service Bulletins to address some of these problems. Most of the problems I have read about have been for the S60 and S80, and I must admit that my 2003 V70 has had no such problems.
For information on the SatNav theme; My iPAQ 2210 with TomTom 5 and CF card antenna (i.e a stubby thumb-like jobby sticking directly out of the top of the iPAQ) is mounted directly above and slightly to the side of the HU-803 Dolby head unit. I happily received Radio 5 live (909 MW) and Radio 4 (198 LW - from memory coz I use FM in the UK) on a run from Brussels to Boulogne recently even. The only interference came when passing underneath bridges.
|
> recently even
I have no idea where that superfluous 'even' came from!
Oh for the Edit button...

Any tomtom set up will offer minimal interference, only audible if the signal is poor. Even bluetooth set ups.
The key is - reception is poor -
Its gonna be an aerial thing.

RF - My MPV has no visible external aerial but I get perfect MW and LW reception. Listened to loads of the last test match on it - much to the annoyance of young Mrs V who prefers the bingy bongy stuff.

Ball-by-ball cricket commentary is broadcast by the BBC on 2 channels : Radio 4, 198 Long Wave (not available on some in-car systems) and 5Live Sports extra (DAB digital only).
Talksport sometimes have commentary on England's winter tours and can be found at 1053/1089 MW and DAB digital.
|
I think it was also on 648 m world service, going back to the orginal problem a proper aerial will solve the problem

Is the cricket on MW ? I thought it was on LW.

Car is a 2000 (classic) V70R, with the Dolby ProLogic factory system (can't remember model no. can check if important), and TomTom 700.
TEST RESULT (with sat nav removed).
::::::::::::::::::::::::::
1. Radio only on (ignition off), LW and MW reception fine.
2. Radio on and ignition on (still engine off), LW and MW terrible reception
3. Radio and engine on same result as '2'.
So it works with ignition off. (FM is fine in all conditions).
|
It could be an earthing/suppression problem.
Does the unit have an aerial tuning facility? It's usually a tiny hole in the facia that accepts a screwdriver to allow the turning of a small screw, but modern units may not have the feature any more.

I would suggest its
1/ A power feed problem, engine control systems are injecting noise up the power feed. Anew feed from battery would fix this.
2/ An earth problem. Test this by running a new earth lead
3/ Aerial/aerial amp. Does it have an aerial? If its a hidden one get proper one fitted, if its one of the shorter black types (based on a bosch design - black with visible wire ridges in it) dump it- they are rubbish.,
|
I thought the Ashes were done and dusted ;o) anyway.
Oz (as was)

This happened a lot on older cars. One way to help with the problem was to connect a wire between the inner wing and bonnet where the hinge bolts to it. This gave the bonnet a better earth and help screen out the interferance from the engine a lot better.
It might also pay you to connect an additional earth wire to the stereo in the car as well.
