Golf IV Wipers - arms stuck on! - Disco-tek
I'm tring to remove the wiper arms on my 51 plate Golf IV. I've removed the black caps, undone the 13mm nuts and pulled and pulled. I've WD40'd. I've wiggled. I've even put the nuts on loosely and tapped with a hammer. Nothing. 3 years of Brighton Sea Breezes have welded them on! Anyone any other suggestions for getting them off?
(Reason: I've bought the later Bosch Aero arms and blades. Combined with the Polo Aero rear arm they look good and perform well...)

Thanks

Try plus-gas. WD40 isn't a penatrating fluid, whereas plus-gas is.

Take one cloth soaked in vinegar - its diddolves corrosion . Wrap around nuts. Soak again and leave 2-3 days.
Then apply blowlamp carefully with paintwork protected carefully.

Then use a small puller

The way I usually get wiper arms off is to slacken the nut, then lift the arm up at its hinge - so that the arm is approximately normal to the screen. Then, holding the tip of the arm, I gently move the arm back and forth at right angles to the direction of the hinge, thus rocking the joint. The joint usually comes apart very easily. I have never had any problems using this method, even for wiper arms that have been in place for a lot longer than is the case here.

It's no good messing about doing things gently, it's a taper fit. Take the securing nut off, lift the arm just clear of the screen and push it hard and fast in the best direction.
Windscreen fitters and panel beaters don't muck about otherwise there would be an extra charge for removing the wipers.

It isn't for no reason that you do all your work on big heavy commercials then none! :-)

Believe me, the way I remove wiper arms doesn't take long!

Don't remove the nuts completely, undo them a few turns because when the arms come off they will do so with a rush, probably damaging you and the paintwork! When the arms are loose then remove the nuts.

Here in the trade we use battery terminal pullers to remove wiper arms that are tight or siezed.

Mk4 golf wipers are usually ok to remove the old fasioned way. Slacken the nut, and apply pressure at the hinge part of the wiper arm with the palm of the hand to "break" the seal as such, then fully remove the nut and lift off. This is presuming you have already soaked the spindle in WD40.

Apply a small amount of copper grease on reassembly with the new arms.
